Square Enix’s Mike Fischer says Activision was “crazy” to abandon True Crime: Hong Kong (interview)

GamesBeat's Dean Takahashi: Mike Fischer is the president and chief executive of the U.S. division of Square Enix. The Japanese parent company is the publisher of hit video games such as the Final Fantasy series, but it isn’t satisfied with just a strong position in Japan and Europe. The company is “westernizing” its content much the same way that Japan’s Sega tried to do. But Square Enix, which bought Eidos and has a number of North American game developers, is having an easier time crossing borders and is cherry picking the titles that make the most sense. The Japanese company is still making money (while others are losing money), and Fischer says he can choose the best of the content from Japan and Europe and then republish it in North America. But Fischer is also aware that the video game market is changing, and big publishers have to change with it. Among the big titles coming is Sleeping Dogs, which Square Enix picked up after Activision canceled it (under the previous name Tr...

Don't understand how its okay to publish a game like Battleship, but not Sleeping Dogs.

NYC_Gamer4984d ago

Activision thought people would buy into the Battleship brand name

LOGICWINS4984d ago

Apparently thats the case. Funny, I first saw the preview for it when I saw the Grey. Don't know about anyone else, but I knew the film would suck even before I found out that Rihanna was gunna be in it lol.

pr0digyZA4984d ago

Due to there being a movie they probably thought people would buy it based on that (movie was rotten as well). If there was a true crime movie coming out now, then this game would still be with Activision. They only care about the bottom line.

BldyShdw4984d ago

REALLY hope Sleeping Dogs is good. I loved True Crime Streets of L.A. but wasn't thrilled with New York.

SolidStoner4984d ago

Same here..

I will wait and see.. if its near L.A. fun factor then Im buying!

Chrono4984d ago

If you saw the recent video, it looks a LOT better than True Crime.

pr0digyZA4984d ago

Looks promising from gameplay videos and previews. Just remember this is a different team so you must look at this with fresh eyes.

MrDead4984d ago

It’s not a paint by numbers shooter of course they abandoned it, be careful not to go over the lines something creative might happen.

MrDead4984d ago (Edited 4984d ago )

I forgot about that game, it was also dull after an hour or so, or maybe I'm just getting old and a gore fest doesn’t push my buttons anymore. A man needs a little engaging story.

vortis4984d ago

That's not a bad point, but it's like one out of every 10 rehashes.

If they had Prototype 2 this year then it meant they had to get rid of another original game in the process.

Seems like Acti is only willing to put money into original good products after they've milked 10 other products for a while.

omi25p4984d ago

I agree about the engaging story. The story in Prototype is ok.. Not great. I was simply showing that activison do make games other than cod

Valenka4984d ago

It's Activision. Enough said. The only thing they ever do right is Call of Duty. That's what they should stick to.

FinaLXiii4983d ago

im buying this game that i can tell ya.

Kotick Made $155 million from MS in the buyout, the little b*tch needs to stop whining. Thanks to this Microslop deal and massive industry consolidation thousands upon thousands of devs and other workers lost their livelihoods. This greedy piggie pervert needs shut up and f-off.

Basically, their presentation says: Go Woke, Go broke.
Sorry fellow N4gamers.

Alos8836d ago

Or, alternatively, don't cut Switch and Steam out of your biggest releases day one.

360ICE36d ago

If your response to a 112 page presentation from a profit-maximizing investment fund about the need for corporate restructuring (i.e. layoffs), integrating non-gaming (i.e. sell merch or build a theme park) and other corporate initiatives, is that it's about "go woke, go broke", then it's because you've lost the ability to think in any terms. Awful way to live your life. Private equity is destroying the games industry while you obsess that Square made a cringe game everyone thinks is cringe in 2023. Time to move on.

gold_drake37d ago

i mean .. we've been saying this for years.

franwex37d ago

Oh darn. Maybe games with NFTs can fixed that!

Waaah waaah our profits aren't big enough! I mean, they're still growing and all, but we want it faster and NOW! Waaaah!

Microsoft needs to listen or risk irreparable harm to Call of Duty

Windows Central: "The money may keep rolling in, but Microsoft is the custodian of one of the biggest selling video game series in history. If something doesn't change, I fear we'll reach a breaking point and irreparable damage will have been done."

Because ms is so good at managing studios, surely they will get it right

:P

franwex51d ago

In my view, they should probably merge MP with Warzone and essentially make it free to play like Halo Infinite. The campaign/zombies mode can be $30 yearly DLC. I know this would be insanity as most COD players essentially pay the full price of the game simply for the MP. However-with a shrinking player base they may have to consider it. Making it free would bring in a ton of players.

Profchaos51d ago

To late MW3 should have been a lesson but here we are two years later with a steaming pile a shite called blops7

Nothing lasts forever, eventually something will come along to make people forget about COD

Halo killer once arrived and technically call of duty killer also arrived, its name is Fortnite

dveio51d ago

Call of Duty was riding the revenue horse and charts for ~20 years. Whether undeserved or deserved.

But I endorse everyone to remind you that Microsoft could have decided differently when they took it over.

The money was certainly there, and they could have taken their time revamping the franchise:

Current-gen tech, manageable microtransactions, not imitating Fortnite and returning to core values of the franchise's origin.

They didn't.

Let's see next year. Hopefully without the then 13 years old PS4 and One hardware.

blacktiger51d ago

you need to stop saying "let see next year"
