All BD players can be upgraded via firmware, the only difference is you need the manufacturer to send you a disc with the upgrade.

So how is it that the new toshiba hddvd player shows 1080i and bluray player show 1080p? I saw this in an issue of Crutchfield, so unless it is a missprint, how is it a better picture. Don't new Bluray players have the ability for firmware updates?

All BD players can play the movies. Who the hell would buy another player besides the PS3 today? Interactivity is fine, but I rather have higher bitrates, 7.1 Uncompressed Audio, and so on. Furthermore, Blu-ray will get the same features eventually, but you can't make HD-DVD be updated to run 200GB discs. Even more, the amount of stand-alone BD players is so little, that only enthusiasts own them and they will most likely own more than 1 in their lifetime. Hell, they might as well end up disposing them after BD-Live comes out. Still, I heard those players are upgradeable; it's harder, but possible.

Blu-ray, like the PS3, is future proof. Eventually, when all BD players are upgradeable (i.e. this year, where more than 95% will be, and 99% from then on), BDs will be able to hold 200GB and still be read by players. With that in mind, you could even fit the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on one disc, or you could make the 50GB HD movies run in Quad HD.

HD-DVD has got internet connection. Oh my god, didnt think of that. That is just amazing. This must be a revolution, you can actually upgrade your firmware via internet but only on HD-DVD. I cant believe how great that is. (sarcasm)

Blu-ray will be the last likely media disk format, with the majority of households using the internet and speeds increasing rapidly, who wants some silly disk, when you look into the future there won't be much physical media.

But for now, Blu-ray is more popular because of Playstation 3, without that it would be a different story, for now it's HD-DVD sales time!

To some extent I agree, BUT ....

Using the 360 as an example, I like to download the HD versions of movies, however, they still look NO WHERE NEAR, Blu-Ray quality - not even close. On my 1080P 50" TV you still see compression artifacts and the color pales in comparison to HD media (HDDVD or Blu-Ray).

The reason is bitrate. HD movies from Xbox Live are between 3 - 8 gigs for the HD version of movies - depending on movie length. HDDVD/Blu-Ray are between 20 - 40 gigs at a much, much higher bit rate. This gives you solid, vibrant color and rock solid black levels with no compression artifacts (most of the time).

The point is until connection speeds increase significantly and bitrate matched HD disk based media, downloadable media is still a ways off from hitting a point where it makes disk media obsolete (5+ years I would guess).

I would be curious to hear from users of other downloable services for HD (Vongo,Vudu, etc.) with their own comparison to HD disks.

I would love for the author to explain to me how an ethernet jack enables superior resolution for HD DVD!? I guess it uses the PFM protocol to unconvert the video signal. PFM = pure freaking magic. The author of this article is a simply trying to jusitfy his purchase of a now dead format. Perhaps he would like to explain how HD DVD's version of order of the phoenix is superior? Warner used the SAME SOURCE and the SAME CODEC (1080p VC1) for both releases you MORON! Again it must be that PFM (or that sheet you are smoking). Keep telling yourself the HD DVD format will never die...it will...but whatever. Go to your happy place and watch some of those PFM upconverted superior ethernet enhanced HD DVDs. Wow look at that picture...soo much better than Blu Ray.

All HD video resolutions are already supported by all Blu-ray players, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. (Not all HD-DVD players support 1080p).

Even if this were true I've only seen one HD DVD Player for sale on advertisement and the rest all Blu-ray and for the hell of it I've seen a combo player by LG for both formats but that's it.
Tell you the truth HD DVD Player is dead they've had 2 years to try to make a comeback and they didn't do so.
First Toshiba says there's a 51GB Model coming out and guess what never seen it advertised or mentioned.
Toshiba says they have the most players sold and yet most of Hollywood is on Blu-ray's d***.

On almost all Blu-ray and HD DVD releases the main feature is in 1080p. HD DVD almost exclusively uses VC-1 while Blu-ray releases vary with MPEG2, H.264 or VC-1 used on numerous titles.

HD-DVD's do not look better, in fact, Blu-ray delivers at a higher bitrate allowing movies to look better on Blu if encoded that way. Natures Journey and Flags of our Fathers are two neutral releases that have higher bitrates on the Blu-ray equaling better picture.

I'm sorry, but the only bd player that can be profile updated is the PS3 player. You can update the firmware for playback, but not the profiles.
I've updated Sammy's before and it only fixed the drm plus issue with certain new Fox movie releases. Thing is not everyone wants a gaming machine. Most consumers regardless of how well off they are do not want to spend $500 on a new Sharp player that can not play all the features coming on new BD discs by year end.

Ask any consumer and they'll say, if I buy a movie I want to use the whole disc, not just the movie portion of it. I would say the majority of movie watchers do look at the out-takes and deleted scenes on many std dvd movies.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability.
