Pach-Attack! - Why All The GameStop Hate?

What will happen if next-gen consoles don't support used games? Will more minority protagonists make their way to our games? Plus, why all the GameStop hate?

Yea, i don't think next gen consoles are gonna block used games either because if they pay attention to their consumers, they would know alot of people don't wan't this to happen whatsoever.

I like the idea of games having more minority protagonists or antagonists cause not everyone has to be the same color even though it doesn't really matter but in a way, it make's it realistic cause not every good guy is gonna be white or not every bad guy is gonna be white.

I don't know why people hate Gamestop either. I've heard people saying that Gamestop rips you off when you trade a game in but if i get 40 dollars for a new game that barely came out, i'm happy with that cause they can't give you the used game sale price due to them having to make profit as well.

Baka-akaB5109d ago

There are better deals imo elsewhere , but that wouldnt even warrant my disdain for them .

it would be a lot of their shady doings , but most of all those ludicrous store pre order exclusive , or dlc exclusives .

So not only are you already succumbing to a sh*tty dlc trend , but you have to be forced to choose a particular store to purchase it ? Screw that

KMCROC545109d ago

trust me they rip u off, i bought Max Payne 3 day one , trade value was 25.00 dollars on the same day of release.

KMCROC545109d ago

@vega275 that the thing you would expect all gamestops to be given back the same amount across all stores seeing as how they are all corporate owned.unless they have gone the franchise route don't understand why the variation in trade value .

vega2755109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

I agree. But the only thing I dislike about gamestop is they try to sell you a Newly released game opened at full price. Then act like they only do it cause they are worried about people stealing the game. I tell them everytime "if the seal is broken, it's no longer new and the game is used." other than that I have no problems with them.

I think people just expect to get full price for a trade in. When no business give you one. Yeah they have to make a profit so they resell it for more than you were given for the trade in. But again every business does that. Buy a car or jewery or whatever then turn around and resell it to the dealer you bought it from and see if you get back what you paid.

KMCROC545109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

Was not expecting full price but something a tad better than 25.00 for a game i just paid $64.19 on release day. after that day i now allow myself something better than game-stop 1) keep it 2)find somewhere else 3)destroy it.

vega2755109d ago

I bought games from gamestop and gotten back much more for a newly released game. I don't know if it's that store you went to or what. But I've never had a problem with a trade in. I remember buy KZ2 new and three days later returned it and got credited for $40, which went on my purchase of a new game. Again I didn't expect full price or my money back. But now that best buy takes trade in I expect GameStop to give better deals.

kreate5109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

Gamestop is good when there are exploits in their system.

On a average day, u wont be getting 40 dollar for a newly released game u just traded in.

The problem with gamestop is they have a consistency issue. One gamestop will let u use a coupon on top of a promotion while the other gamestop wouldnt.

And many gamestop employees are xbox fanboys. I saw numerous times a customer walked in asking for a ps3 but the employee pursuading the customer to pick up a 360.

The customer walked in with the intention of buying a ps3 but walked out with a 360.

They also have communication issue.
When there is a gamestop sale, i gotta print out the sale/promotion paper and take it with me cuz gamestop employees doesnt know what kind of promotions their stores are doing.

Than when u finally convince them about the sale, they dont know how to ring it up on the register.

Ive emailed the corporate about this before and wrote nasty feedbacks from the code from their receipts and at the end of the day, gamestop is just retarded and ask ppl to hate them.

Cag craig goozex amazon ebay are my friends. And retailers
wonder why they're not doing well .....

And for a company who makes good money, they got 1 of the worst refund policies ever.

Uncharted2Vet5109d ago

i like GameStop, i don't see the problem with them besides a couple of nitpicks i have

MySwordIsHeavenly5109d ago

I worked for GameStop for three and a half years. What is there to LIKE about GameStop?!? I work at a much better used game store now. They give you more cash for stuff and sell them at cheaper prices. We even buff every single disc that comes in. We're making bank, too! GameStop is making significantly more money than it needs to.

KwietStorm_BLM5109d ago

I could write a term paper on why I hate gamestop

NeoTribe5109d ago

People hate gamestop because its one of the cool things to hate on. Kinda like cod. People hear someone hating on somethin and they wanna be a part of it without even knowing wut the hell there hating on. Gamestop buys and sells new and used games. You don't want to trade your games in there than don't.

Pachter: "I Think The New Xbox Console Is Already Dead, They've Blown It by Embracing Game Pass"

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the next Xbox console might be already dead due to Microsoft embracing Game Pass at $30.

You know the world is f’d up when you can agree with Michael Pachter

VenomUK75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

You know the world is f’d up when Michael Pachter has given up cheerleading Xbox.

Eonjay75d ago

The crazy part is that this crazy fool was saying that Sony was doomed (or in his words 'going to be run over by Microsoft') because of GamePass after the Activision Deal. He was the one telling them to embrace GamePass and now that its killed them he is acting like he never said that.

Iceball200075d ago

I agree but that was before they doubled the price of game pass

peppeaccardo74d ago

this senile old f@rt is still in business ?

blacktiger74d ago

You know the world is f'd up when investors listen to Michael Patchtcher after the advice "Sony is doomed if Microsoft buys Activision and put it out on gamepass"and now he's saying "I Think The New Xbox Console Is Already Dead, They've Blown It by Embracing Game Pass"

I feel bad for investors.

It’s true what they say “even a broken clock is wright twice a day”.
In this clock case is twice a game generation 🤣

Wouldn't it be the case of Pachter finally agreeing with parts of us rather than we agreeing with him?

I remember vividly that back in the day when GP was introduced and shaped further, many of us were saying that it's a great service on one hand. But were also already skeptical, too, as to how Microsoft would be able to keep the service running financially in the future.

Or/and how it would affect studios and game development in general.

As of March 2026, I think we have the answers some of us anticipated back then, when it was still Pachter who had forecasted «100 million subscribers».

Outside_ofthe_Box74d ago

A lot of this is just basic logic and common sense.

How much does it cost to develop a game? How much does it cost to market a game? How much does it cost pay devs/publishers to release on GamePass?

How much do users pay per month/year on GamePass? How many users does Microsoft need to be subscribed at once for them to truly be profitable to where GamePass pays for ITSELF(i.e not including stuff like in app purchases that they would get regardless of GamePass' existence).

You would need a large amount of subscribers or increase it's price to a point where it's no longer a "bargain" for it to be profitable.... if you're asking me. For some reason Pachter didn't see it that way nor did MS' users.

bigfish75d ago

Likely the next Xbox will have a premium price tag so they have some profit margin on the low numbers they sell. We all know that the bulk of revenue will come from 3rd party sales on other devices and perhaps some from game pass.

Hypertension14075d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Not to mention the fact that if it does have steam, nobody is going to buy games off the windows store.

If they dont have free online, this thing is dead to me.

TheCaptainKuchiki75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

And even Gamepass flopped. The end goal of Gamepass was to be hegemonic, to kill game purcahses with subscriptions. But that never happened. Game sales are still thriving, Gamepass' subscriber count has stalled, it's costly for MS and studios and its price is increasing.
The purchase of Activision allows them to hide Gamepass' failure. Not suprising that gamepass was removed from Nadella yearly bonus, they knew they would never hit the targets.

Michiel198975d ago

the tinfoil hat is on!
You think they spend 75 billion to hide that gp isnt doing well? XD
They totally didnt buy activision because they got some of the biggest and most profitable ips on the planet, but instead they bought it so you can't say online that gamepass failed!! that's totally the reasoning fr fr

Outside_ofthe_Box74d ago

He never said any of that..

Said that it ALLOWED them to, not that it was THE reason for the purchase...

TheCaptainKuchiki73d ago

learn to read each word before hitting "reply"

Rainbowcookie75d ago

I am not a Pachter fan , but I have to agree...who would have though. It used to be to sell cheaper hardware that is subsidised by First party game sales in the first few years until you can reach millions owning the console and by that time you can cheapen your hardware because the tech have been revised. With gamepass on everything and developers losing sales that option is now limited. With the onset of more options for games and developers going for Gass gambling FOMO style games and dlc consumers have become rightfully picky. Add that to growing hardware prices and escalating ram and pandering to society... it kills a brand. Most og gamers are gonna find you out and stay away. Put on the pressure of companies demanding higher revenue for sales, the poor developer has no other option to put a new coat of paint on a copy of another successful game. Innovation , what we are looking for doesn't happen a lot because the danger of failing could lead to budget cuts and them letting you go...so you play it safe and make a copy of a copy. Yes we get genres and types but 80% is the same game we have had for ages. So then because you are scared you let them put it on gamepass and you know you know at least what you get.

Gamer Tries to Sell PS4 Pro to GameStop, Ends Up Being Asked to Pay the Store

A gamer tried to sell his PS4 Pro to GameStop USA and found out that he would actually have to pay the store.

Lionsguard430d ago

Gamestop: And I'm taking a huge risk here.

1Victor430d ago (Edited 430d ago )

Well there’s no stop like GameStop I’m surprised they didn’t go deeper into the hole with their USED cables and controllers prices.
Edit:
For those that don’t know if you go to trade a console you need it to be ready to go with all the controllers and cables if you don’t have them they ask you to buy them and deduct the price from the monetary appraised for the console

Gamingsince1981430d ago

That makes perfect sense really, why would you be selling your console without all the things it came with and needs to actually be used.

jznrpg430d ago (Edited 430d ago )

eBay.. not having anything for it makes it seems stolen though

Profchaos430d ago

Not always I've seen plenty of refurbished units go cheap because people have picked them up broken then repaired and onsold with no controller or cable. When they are this old many people just want to replace the main unit

jznrpg430d ago

I doubt those people are selling at GameStop

BeHunted430d ago (Edited 430d ago )

In the UK, eBay has removed selling fees, letting you list and sell any item for free.

andy85429d ago

Correct. This is why day one games cost me practically nothing now

Eonjay429d ago

They are gonna take that same console and sell it for $300.

Inverno430d ago

GameStop era ended in the teens. Let it die bruh.

S2Killinit430d ago

I love gamestop. I still shop there. I prefer buying a game from a game store than a department store.

Inverno430d ago

I preferred goin to Circuit City but that died out. Years back I'd go to Best Buy cause of Gamer Club, now Best Buy barely sells games and doesn't sell Blu-rays and looks dead most of the time. Same with GameStop, these stores look like a barren wasteland of Funko Pops and anime figures. These retail stores don't seem to care about pulling in customers. Those figurines are neat, I collect them too but they ain't pulling me into a GS. Rather than attracting gamers they've pay walled everything behind a subscription. As if they weren't already cheapskates back then with their trade ins.

FinalFantasyFanatic429d ago

I still go in there and browse, but never buy anything, the video game section is getting smaller and smaller, even the PS5/Series X/Switch game selection is getting tiny.

tiron8429d ago

I miss Best Buy's Gamer Club, I used to get pre-orders for like 20% off often with other discounts then get points I could trade into discount rebates. It was so good, getting day 1 games for like $30.

When they shut that down I stopped buying games day 1 almost completely.

raWfodog430d ago (Edited 430d ago )

I stopped going to GameStop when they no longer let me use my monthly $5 rewards points towards PS network cards.

Knightofelemia430d ago

Weird I live in Canada and the Gamestop near me says you need the console, controller, controller cord, and an HDMI cord before they will take a console on trade. And if the console shows signs of being opened they still won't take the machine. And if you upgrade the PS4 HDD from 500 gig to a 1TB they will count that machine as modified and label it as a 500 gig model. Better to just sell it on Facebook Marketplace.

clevernickname429d ago

I also live in Canada. I had a similar experience trading in an Xbox One S. Gamestop would give me a pittance for it, so I sold it on Marketplace for almost as much as the original selling price.

GameStop plans widespread store shutdowns after closing 300 locations last year

GameStop has announced plans to shut down stores across the country after closing 300 locations just last year.

The popular gaming retailer says net sales have fallen 20 percent, now sitting at $860 million - a drastic change from its $1.08 billion in 2023.

Also giving you about $5.00 off for buying a used game is just bullshit. For example: https://www.gamestop.com/vi... New is $59.99, if your going to sell it for a used price it needs to be at least $10-$20 less. I hope GameStop just goes away.

OtterX517d ago

Same nonsense they were doing 20 years ago. 🙄

Time to take old yeller out behind the shed...

Grilla517d ago (Edited 517d ago )

One of the reasons I went digital. I used to trade games in back in the day when money was tighter. Trading a game in for 10-15$ isn’t worth the trouble. Especially when they turn around and sell it for almost full price.

RhinoGamer88517d ago

Not surprising, but sad. WooT is killing it with their game discounts...on new games.

raWfodog517d ago

This is just market forces adjusting for GameStop’s long-time practices of nickel and diming the consumer. I feel bad for the workers though. It’s not good that they have to lose their jobs over this.

P_Bomb517d ago

Unfortunate for the staff, but not unexpected.

46player517d ago

Not too surprising. Lots of people buying digital.

And GameStops trade in and resale pricing strategy is awful for customers. I will miss them when they are gone though.

Most I will miss being able to trade in a console, get a couple hundred towards the new model like PS5 to PS5 Pro.

SonyStyled517d ago

I’ll miss the midnight launch parties. Standing in line with strangers sharing our excitement about a video game. Digital took that from us. I wish younger audiences could experience how joyful it was

Kombatologist517d ago

I often think about times like that and how good we had it, before social media and smart phones gave way to a generation that expects instant gratification.
