I've been a devout Virtua Fighter fan ever since my days with the ill-fated Sega Saturn. When I received the first wind that the 5th installment would finally grace my PS3 I almost peed a little.
When I popped this game in for the first time I went straight for the arcade mode to kick some ass with my favorite fighter: Jacky. I noticed that the control scheme had changed, although slightly, It still took a little while to re-learn the basics. I hit the training mode soon after to get back into the swing of things.
Major improvements have been made upon VF5 that are very welcome. Graphics, obviously look great. The character models look awesome, except for the fact that most of them look too shiny and look like action figures. Same thing can be said about the arenas, they look really good, but too cartooney. But hey, no big deal.
Another thing that I thought was really cool was how the fighters move a little more fluidly than the previous games. Not as robotic and stiff. The way they react to kicks, punches and especially throws looks a lot better.
The sound effects and voice acting are pretty much exactly the same as before. Totally hammy dialogue is the name of game here. The bad voice acting isn't nearly as obnoxious as the new 'in-fight commentary.' Holy god! Do yourself a favor and turn it off before you even jump into a match. It's nice to see that the devs wanted to try and add something new to the franchise, but it just ends up putting a damper on the experience.
Two new fighters have been introduced this time around, Eileen with her Kou-Ken 'monkey' style, and El Blaze brings Lucha Libre into the mix. I found Eileen a welcome addition to the roster. Her basic move set is fairly accessible while her more complicated moves will take some time to master (pretty much like everyone else.) On the other hand, I personally didn't like El Blaze all that much. I found a lot of his moves to be unbalanced and cheap. Not to mention he looks pretty funny when fighting most of the other characters just because he's so damn tiny!
As for the rest of the package, Quest mode is back and as fun as ever.
It gets really addicting trying to level up your character and unlock new clothing and items for them. It's very enjoyable to use your customized character throughout the different game modes. Online mode is missing here, why PS3 didn't get it, even as a patch is beyond me.
I totally recommend this game to anyone looking for a challenge. I don't mean any disrespect when I say this, but the Mortal Kombat crowd need not apply here. Virtua Fighter has no weapons to use, no magical powers, no monsters, no blood etc.
Go pick it up if you're still on the fence about buying it. I saw it at GameCrazy for under $15 used. A fun, challenging fighter that stands strong amongst it's gimmick-based opponents.

Although fighting games are entering a new Golden Age, there's a number of franchises that deserve to be brought back.
I think licensing is one of the major reasons Fight for NY hasn't been ported, since its original release. Def Jam had a poll on their Twitter a year or two ago asking if people would be interested in a new entry to the series. A surprise next gen release with AKI developing it would be cool
Definitely yes to Weaponlord, Bloody Roar, Rival Schools, Power Stone, Bushido Blade, Darkstalkers, and the Def Jam games. I was really big into fighting games when I was younger. I would Like Primal Rage, B.A,T., and Eternal Champions to come back as well.

It’s been a while since we got a new Virtua Fighter game. What’s going with the series?
Ask Sega. All of Yu's games haven't gotten updates. And they aren't helping to bring Shenmue 3 to console and PC. Spent most of their time on Sonic and Yakuza. Like they forgot the man that got them started. He was the "Miyamoto of Sega." Too many hits under hits belt.
VF is one of the best if not the best, technical fighters around based on real fighting styles. No supers, no finishers, etc. I wish there wasn't any juggling. It was fun as a videogame mechanic but I would like full realism for a fighting game. It's like adding nos to Gran Turismo. Would be fun. Just doesn't fit the realism Kaz wants in his game of winning through skill and perseverance.
I'm hoping for a new Sega surge of games in and out of VR and more respect for Yu and his properties. It's just not the same Sega I grew up with though.
As a side thing, Sega could have even updated Last Bronx to a modern fighter like Namco did with Soul Blade to Soul Calibur.

But they've sat on that too.
Loved me some VF wish they would update the game i still remember my first Jeffery power bomb on VF 1.
