Review of unreal tournament 3

Where to start with Unreal Tournament 3 well it's one of the best if not the best First-Person Shooter on the market today and in it's old age(one year old)it's good to see that it hasn't lost any of its exitement, spark or overall greatness thanks to mods(modifications, created by a very loyal pc orientated fanbase)that greatly improve the games' longevity.

Unreal Tournament 3 though has always been very(and in my opinion needlessly)criticized for it's lack of a storyline, but to me it's mostly about gameplay, which by the way is awesome. I mean if you want a great story you get a movie not a game. Graphics are good as well and this means you can really feel the atmosphere as you sneak up behind the unfortunate gamer with your flak cannon ready to blow him to pieces.

This game then is the perfect answer to the hardcore FPS(First-Person shooter) fan's prayer, but even if you don't like First-person shooters this game will change your mind, spectacular, in almost every way but that's not to say that this game's without it's faults like the sometimes rather stupid A.I and i will admit, contrary to a previous statement; sometimes annoying lack of a story, no split-screen multiplayer or co-op, fiddly vehicle controls (no different to most other futuristic FPS's). Other than that though, Unreal Tournament 3 is probably as close as your going to get to FPS perfection, until they make Unreal Tournament 4 anyway.

In conclusion a great buy if you're a hardcore gamer in the market for a hardcore FPS game then this game is definetly your best choice.

yeah lack of splitscreen multiplayer really affected my decision to buy this game.

I love it. I play it whenever I want to just blast away people in a hopeless futuristic
universe. I always check out all the new mods & mutators.

I like to challenge myself using the mouse & keyboard in a deathmatch.
very precise. I customize my matches with the pcextreme mutator & super beserk
for hours.

Twitch shooters should invest in a USB flash stick & head over to the mods site &
download hundreds of maps, thousands of mutators & a few mod charachters you be surprised as
to how much better they look than the game they originally came from such as :
Samus of Metroid
The entire cog & locust characters from gears of war
The Nano suits of Crysis
Masterchief of halo3
Cloud & others from final fantasy
And much more .

I'm dissapointed in the lack of support from epic though. I
felt they abadoned the game & only offered 1 patch & 2 maps.
they haven't fixed the mic problems either but screw them the guys who
make the game are the Mods. They are the best!

Its simple mind numbing fun. The purest form of fraggin you can find in this
generation. Cool review, thanks.

I mean, they had their minds set on releasing the 360 version of the game, which I have not played, but am pretty sure that it's the exact same thing.

Kleptic6338d ago

same visuals...no mods...and with splitscreen...the PS3 version is without question superior imo, because of those mods...but some people still like the splitscreen stuff...so whatever...

Gears 2 is why this game was abandoned by Epic though...

Still a great game! Definitely at least a 9/10, IMO.

I own it and think it would be a great game, but the online interface is kinda what killed it

rbluetank6361d ago

Epic doesn't believe in adding a story to any of it games.. This is what kills long term use of their games. I have always trade in their games soon as the online gets boring... Thanks for the Patch, but gamespot has the game now...

paracardium6361d ago

Yeah I had a blast with it..but I haven't picked it up since April.I'll give it another shot tonight.

na2ru16361d ago

they had a kickass looking protagonist(Markus and Dom fused togwther).

They had badass looking monsterlike enemies.

Vehicles were awesome

the visuals and cutscenes looked very good(as good if not better than Geow2). SO WHY DIDNT THEY ADD A REAL CAMPAIGN?

Kleptic6361d ago (Edited 6361d ago )

why...do...people...ask...this ?...

not trying to single you out...but seriously...is this your first UT game?...its an arena shooter...they simply do not have stories...they don't work that way...they don't play that way...its a twitch shooter designed from the ground up to be played against other human opponents...

just like Quake III...every UT game has been 95% multiplayer focused...with an almost funny practice mode referred to as a campaign...and believe it or not...UT3 has nearly 5x the campaign of any other arena shooter to date...

if its not what you expected single player wise, you most likely should of tried some of its predecessors...

and that also isn't where Epic failed on UT3...the game used to have a massive following...Epic just incorporated garbage community support into the title...no mod searching in game, which was something that had been asked for since the beginning of the decade...it had minor stat tracking...and had zero modern gimmicks like unlockables or leveling...no real clan support...no in game ladders or ranked matches...nothing to push the competition among players...it was just a join and play situation, same as 1999...and you had to search through dozens of poorly laid out websites and forums to get involved in any 'ranked' tournaments or clan events...

on paper it didn't sound too bad...take 90's gameplay and mix it with a decent engine and everyone is happy...i don't mind the old school gameplay...I just mind the old school community features (read: lack of) that disappeared for a reason...

no offense...but it is very clear that you were introduced to Epic by means of Gears of War...and not Unreal back in 1997...believe me, there is nothing wrong with UT3's single player for fans of the series...this franchise has NEVER been about single player experiences...flak cannon weakness aside, its arguably the best playing UT game to date...its just it didn't get the non gameplay stuff it truely needed to survive this time around...

rbluetank6361d ago

I have been playing UT games back in 2000 and 2005 with the pogo sticks in hand.. lol. i liked that one the best. i said that epic does not believe in story.. true or false. You admited and i admited that they do not have a story mode;so true. Epic does not believe in storys wethers that UT or Gears. We both agree. I only played UT series on consoles and not computers. everything i said and you said was true.. lol tc
