The DS goes blocky

The original Tetris was one of the Game Boy's best-selling games. And Tetris 2 is one of my favorite NES games that I play to this day, and if I had to describe Tetris DS in 5 words, then it would be "It mixes old with new". This is true throughout all aspects of the game, from the sound to the controls.

Tetris DS is an arcade-style game with 6 different game modes that are available from the start. There's Standard, which is like the original where you have to get the blocks in a horizontal line, Push, which is like a competitive Standard mode, Catch, which requires you to control a core that you must attach falling blocks to make it explode, and there's Puzzle and Challenge, which make you use your brain. Each mode is well done and none of them truly stand out above the rest.

The graphics and sound are unique, because the game combines the graphical and sound power of the DS, and uses characters, background, and music from the NES in their 8-bit forms(among them are Mario Bros. 1 and 3, Zelda, Metroid, Exitebike, and, you guessed it, the original Tetris). But they used them in a way that actually fits the mood of whatever game mode you're playing, and it actually enhances the experience. The controls work well, too. They combine basic button controls with using the touch-screen. And, like everything else in this game, works well and makes the game even more enjoyable.

The multiplayer engine is one of the greatest I've ever seen. Local wireless can support up to 10-player single card (yes, 10-player) play with no lag at all. Wi-Fi only supports 4-player, but it still has no lag, despite the fact that you be playing against someone 10,000 miles away.

Tetris DS is, without a doubt, one the best games available for DS, and if you liked the original, then you should definitely buy this game.
