User Review : Strider

Ups
  • Strider is back.
  • Cool upgrades and abilities to be used.
  • Nice boss fights.
Downs
  • Generic storyline.
  • Poor BGM sound quality.
  • Low to moderate replay value.

Strider Hiryu is back.

----------
Story
----------

The story takes place in a distant future. Strider Hiryu is tasked to kill Grandmaster Meio at Kazakh City. However, many enemies are fighting him back and Strider needs to dispatch them in order to get to his target, Grandmaster Meio.

Very basic and straightforward plot, with not much plot twists to make it more entertaining. As this game is quite short, not much story can be told however. None of the characters are memorable, except Strider Hiryu himself due to his fighting prowess and cool design.

----------
Gameplay
----------

This game is a 2D styled action game like the previous Strider games. Your main weapon is Cypher, a powerful sword wielded like a tonfa and can be used to slash at enemies repeatedly. You can jump, run, climb walls, and slide to avoid enemy attacks as well. Since you cannot guard against enemy attacks, you have to strategically jump or slide to avoid enemy attacks. Health can be obtained upon defeating enemies or breaking containers that have health.

Progression is rather simple, as a marker will be shown in the game's map to indicate where you need to go next. Most of the time, you need to collect certain upgrades to progress in the game. There are many areas in this game which are connected to each other, and you have to backtrack to certain areas to progress, or to collect optional collectibles.

All of the upgrades that you find in the game are useful in combat, such as the powerful Explosive Cypher. Reflect Cypher and Kunai. All of the new upgrades that you find are necessary to progress as some obstacles require you to use it as well as getting collectibles like health upgrades. Some of the upgrades are optional, but can be helpful in combat if they are obtained.

There is a variety of enemies to be fight in the game, such as shield-wielding soldiers, turrets, and many more. In some cases, some enemies are immune to a number of your attacks, and you have to switch to the correct weapon to defeat it.

Bosses are the tougher enemies that you will encounter in the game, and they can be quite challenging even in Normal difficulty if you are not careful enough. If you die while progressing or fighting bosses, you will restart at the latest checkpoint.

The gameplay in this game is much more varied compared to previous Strider games. It is a good game, but it has issues such as imbalance difficulty when fighting bosses or when progressing in the game. Backtracking is generally a must in the game, so it can divide between players who like or dislike backtracking in the games.

----------
Graphics
----------

The 3D styled graphics look good, making Strider looks both modern yet stylish like most 2D styled games. Framerate is rather solid, with not much bugs or glitches present when I played the physical copy of Strider.

----------
Sound
----------

Not much to write about the voice acting, as it is used very sparsely in the game. Overall, the voice acting is acceptable.

The soundtrack is decent, but the sound quality is pretty poor as the music can be barely listened even if you max out the volume in the audio settings, Sound effects are generally still good, but the background music quality is just poor.

----------
Replay Value
----------

This game has low to moderate replay value. You may start collecting all collectibles, complete the game in Hard difficulty, or attempt the Challenges in the game. Getting all Trophies in this game is easy, so it increases the replay value slightly if you are interested to do so. Oh, you will not be able to carry over your upgrades once you have finished the game and start a new playthrough.

----------
Conclusion
----------

Overall, this is a decent 2D action game, with brand new ideas like weapon upgrades, a variety of abilities to be used, and etc. However, the backtracking in the game can be a major issue, depending on players. Level designs can be both creative as well as challenging. I highly recommend interested players to get this game when it is on sale as this game has not much replay values. Strider fans may enjoy this game a lot, however.

Hi. I am honoured with your offer, but I would like to decline it. The reason is that I do not think my reviews are still good enough yet and I would like to improve it by keep on writing them freely without any restrictions.

Regardless, I am thankful with your offer, and I would like to wish you good luck in finding other writers from this site.

A fair score, game wasn't bad but done nothing to hold my attention for long enough to complete it.

Think I prefer the original as it was an end to end blast minus the adventure element.

Dante's inferno... an excellent GoW inspired game. So sad the sequels will never be.

LoveSpuds1350d ago (Edited 1350d ago )

I recall enjoying it well enough at the time, but it wasn't a patch on God of War 3 which came out around the same time I think.

I own it and fired it up on my PS3 about 6 months ago and time hadn't been particularly kind to it although it still very much nailed the atmosphere and it is a cool as he'll setting and universe.

Inverno1350d ago

Dante's Inferno needs the GOW treatment. No cut camera, with a real hellish depiction of the 9 circles and a story as dark and as serious would be amazing.

Yui_Suzumiya1350d ago

Still pretty amazing there was a PSP version that was actually pretty good. I remember playing it 10 years ago. I had the PS3 version when it first came out and loved it.

Ahh the memories of playing Heavenly Sword
Such a amazing experience

LoveSpuds1350d ago

Yup, I remember being blown away with Heavenly Sword. I remember holding out hope that they would go back and add trophy support as a incentive to go back and replay the game, but I don't think they ever did?

Yui_Suzumiya1350d ago

I couldn't beat the final boss though! Spent several days trying but eventually gave up, lol. Still enjoyed it though.

refocusedman1349d ago

heavenly sword was such a short, but amazing game. that game should be prime material to be made into a download only remaster.

YoungKingDoran1349d ago

I really enjoyed Castlevania, but struggled to get into it again reattempting it a few years back. I still think it does another of things well; story, presentation, level varietily and art style at least. Gameplay maybe has not stood test of time unfortunately which makes it a chore to get through.

Humble Capcom Playstation Bundle Nearing End Date

Carl Williams writes, "If you are reading this then you are probably a fan of retro games. Just taking a stab in the dark there. Well, we just found out that Capcom, one of the better retro supporting companies out there, has this package with Humble Bundle full of Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 games. You better hurry and grab this one because time is running out."

If they had more PS4 games I would've taken advantage of this.

triverse3588d ago

I have to agree. I wish companies would do more porting of their previous digital only games such as Final Fight Double Impact over to the PS4. I want to get a Playstation but 3 seems on the way out and 4 is still too new for a lot of what I am interested in.

NapalmSanctuary3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

I wish they would port their full classic line brawlers from the 90s. Man, they made some good games back then.

triverse3588d ago

Napalm, check out their PSP Reloaded and Remixed collections. Great value for the money and full of their core retro games. I am not sure what consoles they released those collections on but I am sure PS3 and Xbox 360 were in there.

just-joe3588d ago

Or say if the PS4 was backwards compatible.

triverse3588d ago

Well, we know that is not going to happen anytime soon, at least not till people stop buying PS3 games and such. Sad. I wish it was backwards compatible too- I would buy a PS4 immediately if it worked with at least the digital stuff from the PS3.

DivineAssault 3587d ago

I wish Sony would get the licenses for all the classic arcade games from the 80s and 90s for the PS4.. I dont see why they wouldnt want to make money? I miss those brawlers like xmen, tmnt, etc.. So many great games people are forced to play on mame

triverse3587d ago

The problem with that idea is that a lot of those companies are now defunct and no one really knows who owns the rights to what game. Then in cases like X-Men, it is multiple companies involved (the engine would be Konami's while the actual X-Men license would be Marvel's) and sometimes none of the companies involved are interested in working together again for whatever reason.

I wish it would happen too though.

Awesome deal.........for PS3 owners

IamTylerDurden13600d ago (Edited 3600d ago )

Considering both Resident Evil games are $20 each on PS4, and considering the entire bundle is $15, it's actually a good deal for PS4 AND PS3 owners.

yeahright23600d ago

So looked through the FAQ and the guidelines and I don't see that I'd be violating anything by doing this (didn't think so but safer to check). If I'm wrong, sorry.
So I bought this humble bundle and I already have a few of the titles, So I figured I'd leave those codes peppered around N4G comments and well, first come first served. Hope whomever gets them enjoys them.

Got it! Thanks :D you a Straight up beast ma man :O

yeahright23600d ago

You are most welcome. That one is probably my favorite out of the bunch.

SSjDomon3600d ago

Hook it up with Resident Evil bro! Lol.

yeahright23600d ago (Edited 3600d ago )

Had to keep resident evil. that was the only reason I went that high in the bundle.
Though I'll never buy street fighter V out of principle (and I don't care for fighting games) so if you want 45% off, here you go: 2AM2HD7HH2

SSjDomon3600d ago

Thanks, I appreciate your generosity. I understand you can't share Resident Evil, that's definitely the gem of the collection! Thanks again, you're too kind.
