User Review : Quest of Dungeons

A Resplendent Retro Roguelike

Once upon a time, games were challenging. The roguelike dungeon crawler subgenre dared players to delve into the unknown, risking life and limb in search of treasure and glory. Victories were hard-fought, not handed to players as a matter of course. Deaths were frequent and gruesome, but they were always memorable. In short, games demanded something of their players. Surviving to the dungeon’s next floor was a privilege, not a right. Players had to rely on skill and careful planning to best their foes, making success all the more satisfying. Quest of Dungeons harkens back to this glorious (and ruthless) age of gaming, pulling players into a world of peril and payoff, of monsters and treasure, and above all, fun.

Quest of Dungeons establishes its identity as soon as you start a new game. A brief animated intro tells you all you need to know: the world has fallen to darkness (what’s new?), and there are four adventurers that must plumb the depths of a decrepit castle to vanquish hordes of evil monsters. It all sounds like fairly standard fantasy RPG fare, and that’s because it is! Quest of Dungeons is charmingly self-aware, with constant nods of admiration to its predecessors. The game never takes itself too seriously, making for a thoroughly entertaining and contagiously fun experience.

There are four character classes in Quest of Dungeons: Warrior, Mage, Assassin, and Shaman. Each class feels distinct and enjoyable to play. The Warrior and Assassin use various weapon-based attacks (with a short cooldown time between ability uses), while the Mage and Shaman draw on mana points as a resource to cast a variety of different spells. The Warrior is the most survivable class in melee combat, thanks to his substantial pool of hitpoints and heavy armor proficiency. The Shaman is also able to handle melee combat (to a much more limited extent) thanks to his vast repertoire of debuff and crowd control spells. The Assassin and Mage have an extremely high ranged damage potential. The Assassin is all about single-target DPS, while the Mage is capable of inflicting withering volleys of elemental area-of-effect spells. Each class has useful strengths, a well-defined role, and plenty of skills and spells from which to choose.
