"Im in space!" Portal 2 review

Many times gaming companies attempt to combine many game-play styles into one game. This doesn't usually come out the way they want. Having said that I seriously enjoyed playing Portal 2 not only because it continued the story of the previous game, but because they kept the core game-play and style as they should have. Introducing simple yet complex tools the player can use creates an experience that truly makes you think.

I can see how people who haven't played the game would look at the play time of the game and criticize the pricing but although the game was approximately 6 hours for me my first time through, I felt fulfilled just as I would with any 15 to 20 hour game. If Valve had decided to put more content in I believe it would only have made the game drag.

The co-op was great fun. having four portals to work with really opens up so many cool opportunities, especially with the tools and objects like the light bridge. The experience will differ depending on who your playing with but if you have a good partner you're going to have a good time; when I played we didn't have much trouble, if one of us didn't get it the other usually did. There a very few co-op games I've had more fun with and the separate campaign is good although slightly confusing. (The end through me off.)

One of the only things I was disappointed with was the loading times, not the length but the frequency. I was impressed with the size and detail in many of the test chambers however I was frustrated at the cost of loading times after almost each one.
The other thing that bothered me was Valve's decision to keep Chell mute. I'm not saying she should be talkative or even talk more than once, but even a "Goodbye GLaDOS" would have been crazy at the end. Maybe they'll take it into consideration if Portal 3 is ever made.

Score
8.5
Graphics
Very good improvement especially from such an old engine. Unfortunate side effect of many load times.
8.2
Sound
This game had a high par set from its predecessor. Personally I prefer the first Portal's more ambiance based sound track. I thought it was interesting and unique how Valve made many of the triggers and other objects make music when they were activated.
9.8
Gameplay
Shooting portals is awesome but when you add all the tools they did it becomes amazing.
9.0
Fun Factor
Going back to Aperture Science's beginning is a wonderful experience for any fan of the first game. Co-op brings a lot of fun with team building game-play like no other.
9.5
Online
Co-op is completely different from the main story and is great fun, although somewhat confusing.
Overall
9.8

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name808d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno808d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood808d ago (Edited 808d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno808d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure808d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Xbox - September 2022 Games with Gold

"September's 2022 Games with Gold lineup includes the Xbox One titles Gods Will Fall and Double Kick Heroes, and through backwards compatibility, the Xbox 360 titles Thrillville and Portal 2. February's lineup provides over $66.96 dollars in value and up to 3000 in gamerscore."

darthv721369d ago (Edited 1369d ago )

Not a bad month. Thrillville and Portal 2 are fun and Double Kick Heroes looks like a blast.

Crows901369d ago

Sure. If you want the oldest games possible.

porkChop1369d ago

A good game is a good game regardless of time.

Between GWG and Game Pass, where do you think publishers would rather put their newer games? MS can't force publishers to put their games on GWG.

Asplundh1369d ago (Edited 1369d ago )

@pork
Yeah so they should stop investing money into games that only a very small percentage of their users will play. It's month after month of lackluster titles and they need change it up, I'd rather them just do 1 worthwhile game a month than 4 that most users will never touch, because as of now they're just wasting their money and most users are seeing 0 benefit from it.

porkChop1369d ago

@Asplundh

I do agree. Hopefully once the OG Xbox and 360 games stop we'll see some bigger games hit the service.

CaptainHenry9161368d ago (Edited 1368d ago )

Lol I have to agree with you on that. Old games 😂 I also hate when publishers and developers rely on remakes

Considering how expensive portal 2 still is in the store, and how rare the physical copies are these days, I'd say that's a good addition. It's also upgraded to 4K on the X consoles.

Don't know much about the other ones, but it looks like a better month than usual. Which probably says more about how bad it usually is.

MontyeKristo1368d ago

Nah. Free games still good, regardless. Someone will enjoy it.

Eidolon1368d ago

There's someone for any niche. But people mostly given up on GWG a long time ago.

MontyeKristo1367d ago (Edited 1367d ago )

garryxcs - Eh, semantics. I pay for a large amount of content, through Gold/Game Pass. Technically, sure, you are right; however, they are games 'given' to me under the umbrella of the platform, that I've not had to outright buy..

If they didn't offer them to me for "free," I would have had to spend *extra* money for them.

Free. 🤷‍♂️🤣

Huh, decent bunch this time around IMHO.

What genres does that combine? I haven't started it yet, but I've been under the assumption that it was going to be a straight WRPG.

Borderlands, Dead Island and Dying Light. FPS + RPG.
