What do a group of flying monsters, ape creatures, walking spiders and freezing towers have in common? Well, if your playing Pixel Junk Monsters thats just some of the beings you'll likely encounter. Remember the release of Tower Defense through the Midway collection not too long ago on the PSN? Remember how shitty that was? This game makes up for that and is fathoms above that piece of garbage.
You play as the leader of your village, bent on saving your friends from the oncoming onslaught of evil monsters. Gameplay is rather simple, you run to nearby trees and through the process of defeating monsters you collect coins that allow you to build towers to defend your people. Each type of tower has a specific ability such as arrows, cannons, air guns, to more outrageous types such as rockets and flame throwers. The more monsters you defeat the more jewels and coins you unlock to defend your people.
This game can be slightly more challenging than the simple design lets on. While monsters can be defeated easily, its important to watch the countdown timer as this gives you an indication of the monsters yet to come. Watching this meter and properly setting out your towers can prevent almost certain doom to your tribe. It is best to plan ahead and make sure you have the resources(in coins)possible to fight off defeat.
Design wise, this game is very simple, the game has an almost hand drawn feel to it, which makes this game all the more enticing. If you are on the fence with the 7.99 price tag, I implore you to try this game out. With very few titles on the PSN, this is definitely a great game to pick up for those starved for original content. And, while the idea is not completely original from the concept of tower defense, the design and gameplay are enough to keep you playing over and over again.

Each week Sony brings PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable owners new content, add-ons, games and more.

Nintendo has just revealed on their website that PixelJunk Monsters will be coming to the Wii U via the eShop tomorrow.
Wow that is unexpected for such an old, but good game. First time the game has been on a console that wasn't Sony.

If you know anything about Q-Games, you know that we made a name for ourselves during the PlayStation 3 era with our acclaimed PixelJunk series. Debuting way back in 2007, we were one of the first indies to cut our teeth on the newly released console. Our idea for the series was simple: rework old school gaming concepts in beautiful high-definition visuals, while keeping the easy to learn, difficult to master gameplay that made us fall in love with games in the first place.
I havent got so far seeing that Im try to get a perfect score and all. I'd give it the same score you've given it. You know what would of been sweet- Online co-op =) . Offline co-op is kool too though.
is it as good as desktop tower defense? because i play that game every freaking day at least once and if this is anywhere near that, i may have to get it.
This game is truly addictive and so much fun. Best 8$ value i've spent in a long time. I agree though the only thing missing is Online...I don't know why they didn't put online in this game, it would have been a 9.5/10.
@chester I've never played that one but if you played any tower defense type games in Warcraft2/3 or Starcraft then you'll absolutely love this game. I think you should pick it up...you'll get your moneys worth and then some.
