PSP gets a new gem to its collection

Pata... Pata... Pata... Pon...
Pon... Pon... Pata... Pon
.....Fever!!!!

Perfecting this beat is what drives you in this game. The creator of Loco Roco has come up with something special...something special which involves tiny eyeballs, drumming and singing trees. How does this work you ask? Bloody well is the answer; this side-scroller fills you up inside with a weirdness which makes you beg for more.

Your role in this game is as the Almighty One, someone whom the Patapon tribe look up to; someone to lead the tribe to glory by destroying their rival tribe, the Zigotons. Now the thing which makes this game truly unique is the controls. In order to control the tribe you beat 4 different drums, 'pata' 'pon' chaka' 'don' which are mapped to the face buttons and used to beat out instructions to the tribe. Different combinations of the drums give different instructions, for example 'Pata' Pata' 'Pata' 'Pon' will send your soldiers marching.

Now while the concept of the game itself may seem pretty simple, it does offer a challenge for even the most experienced gamer. Part of the challenge is not only keeping the timing and rhythm going throughout, but also making sure you keep it tight, otherwise if you miss a beat your troops will fall over and come up with comments like 'Eeps I wet myself!', however you are rewarded for keeping the beat going, getting 10 combos in a row will send the Patapons into Fever mode, where their attacks deal more damage and also the range which they can attack from increases, as you see Patapons jumping 3 times their height into the air.

During your adventure with the Patapons, as well as facing Zigotons (which to be fair aren't too much of a challenge), you also face huge beings known as Ancestral Guardians which can eat your troops and breath fire, which deals considerable damage. It's not all fighting though, you also need to get your rhythm going to get past certain areas, such as the deserts, where you need to get into 'fever' mode which will cause it to rain and make passing the desert a lot easier.

You also can collect items while on your adventure, which you can equip your troops with to upgrade their stats, or improve a Patapon from its original created state. Throughout the adventure you also need to feed your troops. To do this you take them to the hunting grounds, where you can catch either Kacheek, which are similar to boar and are slow and porky, or you can catch Motiti which are fast, lanky birds. You can access the hunting grounds at any time.

Overview

Patapon is a game which will leave a smile on your face, its beat is addictive and after sessions playing it, you will find that you won't be able to get 'pata' 'pata' 'pata' 'pon' out of your head for some time. Despite all of its charm, it is a demanding game which will lead you to get frustrated over time when you start confusing your 'pata' 'pon' for 'chaka' 'don', and quite often in parts of the game if you miss a beat you're chow for the beasts, the other little niggle with the game is there no pause button while you're out on a trek. However, these trivial complants are overshadowed by its fantastic artistic design and the amount of charm this game bursts with. It's a game which reminds us why we love gaming and is the first real gem to come out in 2008...a gem no PSP owner should be without.

I've been wanting to get this game. I played the demo at least 5 times and I love it. When I get together $20 after beating MGS4 I plan on getting this game.

freshslicepizza3467d ago

xDealtwithIt3468d ago

Remasters? This is where bc would have came in handy.

DigitalRaptor3468d ago (Edited 3468d ago )

I'm not against that option, but I prefer having this as an option too.

Enhanced visuals and trophy support... yes please.

xDealtwithIt3468d ago

Not really into trophies, i also own the first two Parappa games. Would love to fire them up.

TGGJustin3468d ago

Agreed. I'm more inclined to go back and play an old game if it has updated visuals and trophies in it. I'm excited for all of these that were announced today.

DashArrivals3468d ago

I'd rather a remaster with updated visuals any day

zombiewombie3467d ago

Parappa looks super clean. The demo on the show floor is the original demo too, when you're in the dojo with the onion.

Except those are PS1 and PS2 games, can you tell me how many original xbox games work for Xbox one BC? Bet ya cant...

Silly gameAr3468d ago

Remasters and BC are two totally different things. Stop tying to make BC a selling point.

DragonDDark3468d ago

Patapon & locoRoco aren't even ps3 games. They're on psp. It's better if it's a remaster.

MasterCornholio3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

They are PSX games which rendered at a resolution at around 240P. Thus if they were simply upscaled to 4K without any work done they don't look as good. So producing remasters that run at a native 4K resolution will make the games look much better than before.

P.S

I made a mistake. Patapong and Locoroco were originally PSP games. So BC would be impossible with the physical version. If I'm not mistaken BC would be impossible with Parrapa the Rapper since its on a CD which is a format the PS4 doesn't support.

Can BC be supported? In theory only with the digital versions of the games.

How could you have backwards compatibility on PlayStation 4 of a PSP game? You didn't really think this through did you?

TKCMuzzer3467d ago

Their PS1 and PS2 games though. Surely a refresh is required. Plus, if you have the games, why have you not kept the console to play them on, seems a bit odd.

Yea, yes and YES!

Sony is really giving those transfer teams lots of contracts this generation!

Semi-OT does anybody know what team is doing the transfer job?

Thus, both can present an article a lot less known as Patapon, as other more popular, as Sonic, Final Fantasy or The Legend of Zelda."
