User Review : Killzone 3

A similar MP experience and a too quick SP experience

I've been playing Killzone 3 for 2 weeks now and here are my impressions/review of the game.

As a huge Killzone 2 fan, I am happy with GG that they added the Coop single player mode. Nothing is more fun than playing Killzone 3 with a buddy. However, after beating the SP in 6 hours on HARD mode, I can safetly say I will not come back to it again, since it is a very forgettable experience. When compared to Killzone 2, Killzone 3 SP misses the mark. Killzone 2 wowed gamers with crazy graphics and a gritty campaign with a memorable villain (Visari). However, while KZ3 has more varied (and beautiful) environments, the plot itself has alot of potential, but is handled poorly by sub-par voice acting, and 2D characters. I still have no reason to feel emotional connection with the ISA or Helghast, since their characters do not develop past the "pissed off" and "sterotypically heroic" behaviours. However, I can say that the campaign does provide a fun one time experience.
Oh and I forgot to add: the sound in the Single player is terrible. The music plays way too loud over the voices, and at times (especially in dramatic moments) its plays too low. Also lip synching can be off.

Now to the Multiplayer, KZ3's biggest strength. First I will start off with the positive aspects. The framerate and stability is much improved since launch due to GG patching the game. Moreover, there are now 3 modes as opposed to 2, with the new one being Operations. Operations makes you work with other people to take down Enemy AI in a variety of objectives similar to the Warzone MP mode. Warzone remains the same, and weapons as well as classes seem more balanced than KZ2. New additions to MP are jetpacks and mechs which are always welcome!

Now to the negative aspects: Controls are more streamlined. What do I mean by that? They have a less weighty feel to them than KZ2, which was what made Kz2 so different than other 'twitch' shooters like COD. In addition, the multiplayer has very few new additions in comparison to KZ2, which makes it extremely similar. Now that may not be a bad thing, but as a person who played Kz2 MP to death, I can safetly say that I got bored of KZ3 MP really quickly. But that is just me, opinions on this may vary. Lastly, the maps. There are only 7 maps that come on the disc, and 3 operations maps. That is a very low number, and unless you buy the DLC, you will get bored fast.

To sum up, Kz3 is a really fun game and pretty to look at game, and should definitely be purchased by newcomers to the franchise mainly due to the Multiplayer. However, Kz2 veterans may wish to save their money due to the lower quality campaign and very similar MP.

Suggestion: Buy for newcomers to KZ franchise
Rent for veterans of KZ2

Good, fair review. Not distracted by the visuals as to not notice the games generic, "nothing new" gameplay. 7.5 is the correct score for this game. But you can expect others to disagree. The only thing I would disagree with, the Sound score, I thought the music of the game and the voice acting was to a good standard. The visuals were fantastic if not slightly too murky. But, with games (at least for me), it all comes down to gameplay. Sure, you can have nice graphics, but they're meaningless if not supporting fantastic gameplay...

Stewie2k85412d ago

i think you where a little harsh on the sound... i didnt think the voice acting was too bad, and at times if it was, the helghast voice acting was great. the music was also good (mines never went to high then too low) and the gun sounds are superb.

AntiHeroComplex5412d ago

ill disagree with your review. While i agree that the story wasnt strong, the voice acting was cheesy (not only the sound itself but also what was being said).... The campaign was way more fun than kz2. Not a single dull moment. Yes it could have been longer, but i honestly dont know how u could make it any more fun...

Jetpacks, varied combat, varied environments, etc...
So ill disagree on the gameplay and fun scores.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic417d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23417d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1417d ago (Edited 417d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger408d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor983d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar983d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg983d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149983d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138983d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim983d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC983d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138983d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle983d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76983d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM983d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730983d ago (Edited 983d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger983d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca983d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy983d ago (Edited 983d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain983d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright983d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.

Killzone 3 is playable with mouse & keyboard on PC via RPCS3 & KAMI

DSOGaming writes: "While Sony does not plan to release Killzone 3 on the PC, Yahfz shared a video that gives us a glimpse at what such a PC version could look like."

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1734d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1734d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1734d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1734d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1734d ago
Vegamyster1734d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1734d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1734d ago (Edited 1734d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

AzubuFrost1734d ago

Shhh don't say that aloud! You're going to trigger a lot of console infidels here.

Shane Kim1734d ago

I rather play it when it's available then wait 10 years.

MadLad1733d ago

Did you purposely miss the entire point of my post?

Inverno1734d ago

Well that's the beauty of still owning a retro console tho. Those who usually complain about emulation are just being blindly loyal to a company. Emulation is great for many reason, but if I still owned the console then I disagree nothing beats plugging it back in and going down a nostalgia trip

The RPCS3 devs are doing great work. And Kami works nicely with it too it seems.
Very neat.

Magatsuhi1734d ago

Been playing mgo on pc with mouse. It's not perfect but I can make it work.

Binarycode1734d ago

2 is the better game.

A Remake would be good. 60fps 2-4k

Omar3li1734d ago

60fps is peasant for FPS games now
