  • Stunning Graphics
  • Terrific gameplay
Downs
  • AI is a little underwhelming
  • Could be more depth to the story between Zeke and Cole

How does this electrifying sequel pan out? Warning spoilers from inFamous 1

Before I start this does include some spoilers to inFamous 1 and my discussion of the endings and plot line has had to be vague because I do not want to spoil it for you

Story: inFamous 2 is an open world game which starts where inFamous 1 left off. You play as Cole. You are preparing to fight The Beast and you must go to New Marais to enhance you electrical abilities. You are accompanied by your friend Zeke and Kuo (NSA agent). The story in inFamous 2 has improved dramatically over the first. The emphasis of morality has much more of an impact when it comes to missions. At certain points in the game you can take either a good karma or a evil karma approach. These missions differ from each other because of the altered approaches. It is a shame that more missions do not have this choice but every mission can affect your karma rating by carless killing of civilians. This makes the Hero route much harder. You have to be careful not to kill civilians because it lowers your karma. The main missions are varying in types and rise to tensions between the main characters. The side missions are nothing special which have small impacts to the game. The main problem I found with the story was that there was little mention of the betrayal of Zeke in the previous game. The only bit I found was near the beginning but that betrayal didn’t drive the story they way that it should have. Zeke betrayal in the last game was a big moment and it seemed it was underplayed in the game. Apart from this small detail I found the story to be excellent. The constant knowing that The Beast will be coming soon build up a slow, but significant, tension. It is a constant theme in the game while you are fighting a new enemy. Without coming into spoilerific detail the endings to this game are amazing. They are polar opposites from each other and they both are still relevant. I myself preferred the Hero ending but both endings are not only sad but poignant to the infamous universe.

Gameplay: Stunning. The gameplay is easy to pick up and play and is very reminiscent of infamous 1 with tweaks here and there. The new power system is interesting. You can upgrade you powers by unlocking them first by getting to certain stages/Hero and Evil Karma rating sand they you have to unlock them by doing combat stunts which you then pay for the upgrades with you XP you earn. Sounds complex but it isn’t. It is nice addition to give your Cole a bit more identity with unlocking power you want. I found though I stuck with the same powers for most of the game because once you get use to a power an know how to use it the others become obsolete. There are different power for different Karma status (like the first game but much more prominent in this game). Like the first game the look of Cole changes with the Karma ratings. As evil you look really pale and ill and with the Hero Karma you look fit and colourful. The close combat is a nice touch bit is not really useful. The machine guns of the enemies make it hard to attack this way but when you do the cinematic nature is stunning to look at. The only problem I found is the camera angle in doing melee attacks. It looks good but can get a bit too close at times but apart from that it is great. The animations are fantastic and fluid but the enemies AI is not the best. They tend to stay out and not get behind cover. A new addition is User-Generated Content (UGC) . I personally found it confusing but after a while it is ok. It’s a bit like LBP UGC. If you know how to make things work then you can make some great level if you do not you end up making rubbish. There are a few level already out. Some are quite good. Defiantly a nice add on.

Graphics: Not really isn’t much you can’t like about this game. They graphics are stunning. Something you expect from a PS3 exclusive. The cut scenes blend well with the gameplay section. The facial animation has improved so much from the first game. The powers look stunning. The comic book cut scene make a welcome return.

Sound. Cole has a new voice in infamous 2 and it is better than the previous game. It sounds more human and less angry. The other character voice acting is great too. They make the characters even more believable.

Conclusion: This is a must have. The game is stunningly beautiful and the gameplay is excellent. The Story is what makes this game and especially the ending which was better than the identity of Kessler and the end of inFamous 1. If you loved inFamous 1 then there is no doubt you will love inFamous 2. Defiantly a must have especially when you can play this game through twice and have a different experience.

****INFAMOUS 1 SPOILERS KINDA*****

I liked Infamous 1's voice better. He sounded like he was in his 30's rather than a gruff 22 year old. The hero ending in 1 is all anyone would need to hear to like his voice more IMO.

I never fully understood Zeke's betrayal in Infamous 1, so its unfortunate to know that it's not fully explained here either.

Nice review, and the only reason I don't have this right now is I picked up Mass Effect 1 and Portal 2 so I'm out of cash for games ATM.

akiraburn5380d ago

I'm definitely with you there 49er. I really preferred Cole's original voice for the character. My main qualm with the new voice actor, isn't that he's not good, it's that during the parts where his voice is supposed to be sort of epic, overpowering, and deep, he just doesn't have enough bass or strength to bring out that side of Cole like the original voice actor did. I've said it before, I still don't understand why they didn't just have someone specifically for mo-cap who performed the lines, and then over-dub them with the original voice actor.

That aside, I think this review is pretty accurate. I'm not finished the game yet myself, so I can't say for sure, however it all seems spot-on. Infamous 2 definitely boasts impressive upgrades in visuals, sound clarity, replay-ability, environmental destruction, and lots of revamping and improving on just about every area. And having the UGC included makes this especially impressive and enjoyable.

However, I personally still have enjoyed the original Infamous even more than this one so far. Comparative to the original, some parts of the story seem a bit under-developed, and I've personally experienced a bit of frustration with how Cole navigates (Grabbing certain climbable objects that I'm not trying to grab, and not grabbing onto others). Other things I think they could have improved upon, would be more variation in all the missions. I think Infamous 1 had a nice variation on missions for a first entry of a game series, but for a sequel I would have liked to see more.

All things considered, it's a great game so far and Sucker Punch should be very pleased and proud with what they've managed to do with this. I just a few personal qualms and things I would have liked to see changed, and maybe they will do so on the next iteration of the franchise.

I strongly disagree with you. Their is absolutely no aspect of inFamous 1 that is better than inFamous 2. I love both games. But inFamous 2 is such a better game.

akiraburn5375d ago

Well I've played the game through entirely now, I'm on my second play through, and I still feel the same way, if not even more in favor towards Infamous 1. I respect your opinion entirely, however allow me to bring up a few things I've noticed which I think will explain why I feel this way. As I mentioned, Infamous 2 is beautiful, and physics-wise it tends to be a drastic improvement. In terms of original scores, it has some of the most epic and amazing music I've heard in a game. It's definitely a real step forward in those areas, and overall it's a quality game with hardly any other sandbox games that come close to it.

The areas I have had problems with though, are having to do with story, gameplay, AI, and glitches. Story-wise, I felt like they jumped through important topics too fast, and didn't spend enough time on character development in comparison to the original. I never really felt as strong of a connection to Nix or Kuo as some of the characters we've met before, and even old characters seemed to be brushed over.

I wanted to feel a certain amount of progression throughout the game, but too often I felt like the story was more shallow and unmoving than the original. Unlocking the second island didn't seem to have that same sense of urgency or accomplishment as Infamous 1 did. I was also disappointed with the final "boss" battles which were overly simple, and especially unhappy with the ending that we were left with (which I don't want to spoil for anyone who hasn't played it).

In gameplay, I've felt that there was generally less variety of side missions available than the original, so it tended to get repetitive (certain side missions such as removing the security surveillance on the sides of buildings, are completely gone). On both my good and evil play-throughs, I've reached the 3rd tier and full karma long before unlocking the second island without going out of my way to do more than half the side missions. In Infamous 1, I’d be much farther before reaching that point. I was also displeased with a lack of actual bosses (I don't really count the mini-bosses since you fight them so often, and they usually take a matter of a 1-2 minutes to kill), aside from the one that you know about from the beginning of the game and the end of the first island, both of which are very simple and unchallenging battles.

In terms of AI, I noticed that very often the game had civilians running into your line of fire instead of away from it. The AI for the enemies was just as bad, and had them either committing suicide or similar problems due to walls being in their way when throwing grenades or shooting rockets. The rocket-launcher enemies were also a major frustration, as they seemed to be spawned far too commonly, and made dying from unseen places a consistent annoyance/issue. All these problems were much less prevalent in the original.

Lastly, I've also come across some bad bugs and glitches. More than once now I have fallen through the geometry and died, meanwhile other problems like the "start menu freezing" issue, has occurred many times for me. In two and a half playthroughs of the first Infamous, I've had only one lock-up and no glitches through the entire game.

Now, all this isn't to say that Infamous 2 is a bad game, because it’s not. It's because of these key issues that I thoroughly enjoyed the original more, as well as having the original voice actor. You may feel differently than I do, and maybe you've had a better gaming experience than I have with it, but this is simply how I have experienced it up till now. If anything changes between now and when I beat this second playthrough I'll let you know, but I hope I've provided a clear explanation of why I feel this way.

The first few hours into inFamous 2, I definitely was getting the wrong, foreign vibe from the new voice actor. After that, though, it sounded fine, even "right."

Can't wait a while when we can openly discuss the ending and what it may mean as for the future of inFamous.

jadenkorri5378d ago

I got 90% done and finished the good side already, i just going through dark side now. The voice was way too different and could of been better, my guess they replaced the original voice actor cause he prob wanted more money. Unless someone else tells me otherwise. I still preferred infamous 1 over the 2nd.

Misterhbk5378d ago

I'm sitting at 21% completed and man I'm having a BLAST with this game. They gave the game a complete overhaul from the first game. I'm still in awe at the facial animations and how good everything looks. Game Play is still just as fun as it was the first time around. Can't fully judge the game as I haven't completed it yet, but damn its too damn good so far.

Misterhbk5377d ago

Just finished it today. Man I have to say this is by far the best game I've played this year easily. Won't say that it's my game of the year until I play through the evil side and then I still need to play Uncharted of course XD. Anyways, Sucker Punch went above and beyond with this sequel! I hope we see more of this world from them in the future!

dinkeldinkse5377d ago

The only complaint I have with inFamous 2 is that Hard was a complete joke in terms of difficulty(Good Playthrough). I had alot more trouble beating my evil playthrough on normal.

Mr Patriot5379d ago

Great review, I freakin loved Infamous, just a little short on money right now :( but will get it soon :)

manumit5379d ago

Sorry that review was horrible, IMO it sounded to try-hard.

iamnsuperman5379d ago (Edited 5379d ago )

What do you mean so i can improve for the next time

Tachyon_Nova5378d ago

I would recommend that you re-read your reviews a few times before you post them. Several sentences don't make much sense, especially in the gameplay paragraph. Most of the time it's small things like writing they instead of the or you instead of your but other times the ordering or choice of words makes it hard to understand.

Otherwise good review with plenty of detail, much better than most N4G user reviews. I'm looking forward to picking this up once I get some spare time next week.

iamnsuperman5378d ago

@tachyon_nova thanks for the feedback

Nes_Daze5377d ago

Great review, I hope I can pick this amazing game out soon.

I want it too. Make it co-op as well.

-Foxtrot1016d ago

Yeah they had a lightning bolt in the shape of a question mark at the end of Infamous 2

They always went off the good ending for Cole so I think for Delsin it should be the bad ending

What he did in the bad ending, absorbing everyone’s powers, seemed like he was going to turn into something powerful.

Makes you feel like he could have been the real Beast and John was just an anomaly because of them messing with time

Sets up a Cole vs Delsin showdown

lukasmain1016d ago

How would fans feel about a reboot? You know to bring a new audience in? Not a good idea? Good idea?

anast1015d ago

Not a god idea. They let it sit for too long and the game hasn't been strong enough to carry itself all these years. There is so much other stuff out there right now.

masterfox1016d ago

Second Son was released in 2014 was an amazing game visually and gameplay wise, sometimes I play it again on the PS5 and seeing it run at 60 fps is something to behold(yes an almost 10 year old game), if you haven't done that on your PS5 try it you won't be disappointed, pure eye candy, a PS5 exclusive of Infamous would be amazing no doubt.

gold_drake1016d ago

meh, i want Cole to come back.

or maybe a reboot. with cole.

Older PlayStation games that we'd love to see on the PlayStation 5

From Xfire: "For a company with a three-decade-long history in gaming, Sony has done a crappy job at preserving its legacy. "

If the PC can emulate the PS3, then for sure the PS5 would be able to do same. but dose Sony want it?

Mr Logic2069d ago

If there was money in it, then Sony would do it. People can bitch and moan all they want, but even if every person on this site used BC, that would still be a tiny fraction of gamers. Almost nobody really uses BC.

DethWish2069d ago (Edited 2069d ago )

I think there would be money if they made PS3 games downloadable through PSNow and added a bunch more.
Edit: I would get it if MGS4 was available

Mr Logic2069d ago

@DethWish

That would be an emulator. You're not making any sense.

DethWish2069d ago

Mr Logic, really? If PS5 could emulate PS3 games (BC) and PSNow would let you download and play PS3 games locally instead of streaming (like it lets you download PS4 games), wouldn't that be awesome? PSNow has some really interesting PS3 games, but I'd prefer to play them locally

MadLad2069d ago

Really?
Remasters of popular games do extremely well. MS basically hands them out for free. If people didn't want to play older games, then why do remasters sell so well?

anonymousfan2069d ago

I honestly would probably never ever use it... But I still think it would be pretty neat. Its one of the few avantages PC still has on console that is complete backwards compatibility. But for all the work needed to implement this I doubt it would be worth Sony's time.

Melankolis2069d ago

In my opinion.
The difference is independent emulator developer can build any emulator as an experiment that will be perfected for years, maybe more than 10 years. During that time, expect many glitch, bugs, and updates. They can do that because they do not have any obligation towards PC users or whatsoever.

Fos Sony, once they announce PS5 will be able to play PS3 games, they have to make it safe and playable for users. They do not want the emulator cause bricks, glitch, heating up or anything to the consoles and get sued for that.

Harkins17212069d ago

The amount of work it would require sony for each game probably isn't worth it. Maybe after rpcs3 is done they can patent it and use it. That's the dream lol

This has been going on for years any full game playable yet

EazyC2069d ago

Wish I never sold my PS3 for MGS IV alone, I'm dying to play it again

Gamerking822069d ago (Edited 2069d ago )

Any ps3 owner has too own this masterpiece . My disk drive has just gone on my old super slim . So I bought the digital version no questions ask . If you have a ps3 own this masterpiece that’s all I can say . I replay it every year and still find loads of enjoyment . The last true metal gear in my opinion . V was good and gameplay amazing , but it’s just not a metal gear quality story wise .
