The flaws in Destiny highlight far greater flaws in gaming journalism than the game itself.

Where does one start when it comes to reviewing Destiny? Is it an fps, mmo, rpg, a combination of the above or something entirely different? Can it be reviewed like a traditional game? Is it something the average COD or mmo player will enjoy? Questions like these can only be answered by those who actually experience the game for themselves, there isn't a review on the planet that can answer these questions for you as I myself have had mixed opinions from different friends. Let me give you some real examples as to why:

1) My 18 year old nephew who only plays COD and FIFA is addicted to this game and has put over 30 hours into it and now his friends are joining in.

2) My friends who read comics all day and speak Klingon who love big rpg's like Skyrim and Fallout have put in over 50 hours and can't get enough.

3) My friends who love DCUO and WoW are addicted to this game

4) My other friend who loves Skyrim, Halo and Titanfall dislikes Destiny to the point he refuses to buy it.

5) Another friend who only plays COD dislikes it as it is to sci-fi for his liking.

The story is probably the weakest element in Destiny as it doesn't really kick in until you hit the Reef. Yes, there are cutscenes before, but like when playing GTA, when you start doing side missions and just having fun with the world that has been put before you, the story tends to take a back seat. It would have been better had they taken a Skyrim approach or a Mass Effect approach, but it is what it is, and it certainly isn't game breaking as it does get better half way through the game. Further more, unlike other games out there, with the Destiny app, the grimmoir cards you earn by playing the game give more depth to the game and the universe Bungie have built. Although not essential, it shows an effort has been made for those who would like to know more about the universe and get more depth from the story, especially if their complaints are genuine.

Longevity:
Whether you like this game or not, you are going to end up pouring 30-40 hours in easily, whether it is on the mp, or the co-opish sp. Either way, I don't see how people can complain when they have bought games with far less content for an equal price or more and this is where the problems with a lot of journalists really starts to show, the reviewing system they use is flawed and can be awfully biased.

Destiny and why it journalist reviews highlights more flaws about themselves than the game itself:

Story:
Games like Titanfall, Mario, COD, MoH, Fez, Super Meat Boy, Resogun, R-Type, Unreal Tournament, Forza, Gran Turismo, and many more have little to no story or have recycled the same story for the last x amount of years, but they have never been penalized for the story or lack of it. They have gotten away with high to perfect scores based on the gameplay or mp alone. However, for whatever reason or agenda, this game right here is being torn apart. I understand that the story elements aren't perfect, but the hypocrisy from reviewers stinks to high heaven where one can get away with it and the other can't. This is by no means an excuse to say Destiny should get away wit hit, or that it shouldn't. Nor is it to say that the other games are bad or should be marked down; this simply is a point made to highlight the problem we have with some gaming journalists when it comes to reviews.

Content:

- 5 planets that each have over half a dozen side missions and are fully explorable in your own time.

- 32 main story missions.

- each planet has one or more strike missions with one or more boss fights that are badass (32 in total).

- the game has a bounty system where you can pick up extra missions that will give you further rewards for completing certain tasks during sp, co-op or mp. e.g. do 6 missions on x planet or collect x amount of resources from x enemy type.

- there is a fully fledged mp with several modes and 11 maps, with everything you would expect from a mp game with the addition of the likes of Iron Banner matches which are like regular mp matches, but where your character fights with his sp player stats.

- several public events on each planet. How do I best describe these? Imagine you are playing GTA V online, walking around beating people or whatever it is you do and all of a sudden the sky would turn dark and a massive drop ship would arrive deploying hordes of gangsters followed by a huge Army Tank that you and everyone in the area have to take out? Sounds awesome? It damn right is and they never get boring as there is nothing better than getting together with a bunch of strangers who happen to be playing with you and kicking ass in an all out gunblazing firefight.

- 2 raids

Grinding and repetitiveness:
I think my friend said it the best when he was playing Titanfall. He said something down the lines off, "I need to level up to the next gen. It is grinding and tough and a pisstake, but the gameplay is so perfect, I don't mind doing it and I can't stop. This is why Titanfall is a 10/10 game for me even with its flaws."

The point here is, it is okay to grind in Diablo, or Titanfall, or COD MP, or BF MP, or KZ MP, or any other mmo or rpg, or Forza or Gran Turismo. It is okay since it is fun to do so and this is why we will give rave reviews. However, for Destiny, the same rules do not apply. All of a sudden leveling up and grinding is bad. It doesn't matter that the gameplay is just as good or that there is more content and more ways to level up to make it less of a grind, which by the way makes it a better grind than any of the above mentioned games. No! For some of the reviewers today it makes it a negative - which logically is absurd at the very least.

Other comparisons or conflicting reviews:

- Games like God of War, Flower, Journey, Resogun, Vanquish, Transistor and many others have very short sp campaigns. Essentially you are buying a game for a price and getting 4-10 hours of gameplay from a single run. Many people won't go into it again and yet these are games which have received some of the best reviews. Reasons are given saying it is about high scores, or the epicness of the story, the scale, the gameplay etc. Some of these games are fully priced at £45-50 and yet they only offer a 8 hour campaign. Here is a game where if you were to rush through it, you would be looking at putting in 12-15 hours. By this I mean ignoring the mp and most other content outside of the sp.

- Unlike the likes of Titanfall and God of War, there is a fully fledged sp, mp and co-op campaign with enough content to last you dozens of hours if not more, and unlike both of them, you get all of it for the same price - meaning you are getting more for your money.

- Unlike many games which have had game breaking glitches at launch yet still received better reviews, this game has non and it pulls these huge worlds and battles off fluidly in 1080p 30fps.

- The argument of, " it does not innovate." Possibly the silliest reason ever to mark a game down. If it isn't broke there is no need to fix it, but furthermore, there are things which Destiny does which are new and are different. The fact Bungie has made these seamless open worlds that can be played the way they are played is one of the new things it does for consoles. At the sametime, Mario for the most of it has been churning out and recycling the same game for a longtime, so has COD, even with Titanfall, people often forget that Brink done parkour first and Killzone done mechs first. Again, the question is raised why is it okay for some and not for others? Why are excuses made for some and not for others?

Destiny is by no means a perfect game, but even with the imperfections it delivers a solid game with some of the best addictive gameplay I have come across in my 26 years of gaming. There aren't many games out there like this and if there are, you will be paying a monthly subscription for them (ps+ and xbl do not count as the money goes to MS and Sony not to Bungie, and you get free games with both unlike with mmo subscriptions). It is a shame that many reviewers have torn into this game with their teeth and I perfectly understand that people have different tastes, but this is not about a difference in taste as it is about hypocrisy, flawed logic and straight up bullcrap. As for now, I am heading back into Destiny for those long grinding all out firefights and epic boss battles

Last but no least, IMO it is important that I highlight these comparisons as reference points to help readers understand, but further it is important because developers will not take complaints / shortcomings seriously if there is so much discrepancy from journalists and the some of the straight up yo-yoing they do from game to game.

Score
10.0
Graphics
The detail put into the worlds, characters, and everything around you is done with perfection. Every planet has it's own character, with variations in colour, structures, vegetation and atmosphere. Couple this with big fire fights running at 1080p 30fps, I cannot complain.
9.0
Sound
Along with the traditional scifi sounds, there is the amazing score perfectly fitting a huge blockbuster Hollywood film. Granted the Ghost is monotone, but reviewers and some gamers forget this is a robot, and for that reason, it can be forgiven.
9.0
Gameplay
Bungie have managed to nail the gameplay to perfection making it highly addictive. Granted the missions are a bit repetitive, but the amount of content coupled with the perfect shooting, looting and upgrading mechanics has made this one of the best games I have ever played.
10.0
Fun Factor
This game is the most addictive game I have played in a long while. The last game I put this many hours into (80+ hours including the alpha, beta and the full game) was DCUO. Since the release of the full game, I have put in about 40 hours and I know there are plenty more hours to come.
9.0
Online
I have given this a 9 as there are few more things I would like to see online. - more missions like Phantasy Star Online - possibly some sort of an optional proximity chat function - the ability to create your own tournaments between factions and squads
Overall
9.0

Conzul4210d ago

Playing Destiny is like playing in the mud.
The fun doesn't really kick in till your friends join you.

UnwanteDreamz4209d ago

Your score aside I feel this sums the game up nicely if you are looking for bulletpoints. I'd give it 8.5

Alicornium4208d ago

YES! You understand this game well, good sir

He paid billions for Starfield. This should be the real story.

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

anast568d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_568d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981568d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140568d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85568d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj568d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman568d ago (Edited 568d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake568d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn568d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg568d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07568d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

568d ago
Knightofelemia568d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom568d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac568d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake568d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark568d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde568d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125568d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.

Ex Destiny and Halo Producer Says Live Service Is 'Better for Developers and Players'

A former Halo and Destiny executive producer has said the live service model is "so much better for developers and players" than the one-off $60 purchase model.

Christopher637d ago

Typically the best games of each year say otherwise.

Christopher637d ago

Alan Wake 2, BG3, Tears of the Kingdom, Elden Ring, GoW Ragnarok, Hades, Returnal, Fallout 4, Dishonored, It Takes Two, Untitled Goose Game, Breath of the Wild, both of The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro, Psychonauts 2, Control, Celeste, Super Mario Odyssey, Bloodborne, The Outer Wilds, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Cocoon, The Dredge, and more and more and more.

Up against Overwatch and Destiny as far as critical acclaim and recognition as 'better' for players.

And, let me be honest, even 'for developers' is a lie. Want to know why? Because it's only good for people who can pump out graphics constantly and not overall quest designers, coders, engine devs, etc.

What this guy means is "we can give a lot of cosmetic content to players, who we think players like more because people spend money on it, and it's best for us because we don't have to pay for a full team to create a new game and just the people to pump out new graphics from one season to another." In no way is his comment a true reflection of what is 'better for players' let alone 'better for the industry stability over longer periods of time.'

This is more investor mindset focusing on maximizing profits by getting consumers to buy less for more while they spend less making it. That's it.

You know what's best for players? Newer, better, and more content that is good and not just cosmetic. Live service isn't that unless you pay $60 a year to them to add more for it (like Destiny and CoD do). Then you might get some improvements and new content. Even then? Not usually.

just_looken636d ago

In terms of player feedback/awards yes but the list you made are all nothing in terms of profit.

Call of duty mobile alone laughs at that list that game is a billion dollar money making machine.

Toss in your apex/mmo/rivals/fortnight/robl ox/minecraft monoploy go or back to console with elder scrolls fallout 76.

Basically there is alot more live service style games that hit or go above the billion dollar mark than your list and that is what the people at top want cold hard cash. Heck alot fo them make a billion + a year

Gta 5 single player profit vs gtao profit as a example now that ps5/series has gtao as a free standalone with gta + there printing cash like its going out of style over there.

Christopher636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

Being more profitable isn't better for the consumer or developers. That's better for executives in suits.

just_looken636d ago

@Christopher

Umm exactly who do you think pay's the bill's and hands out the games budgets?

They have 0 care about a games award's/feedback its all profit driven some use to care like sony back in the day now its profit first.

0 likes shows how many are still on copium thinking the big publishers care about them

aaronaton637d ago (Edited 637d ago )

Well the Poll on the website is suggesting he is massively wrong and out of touch.
A big majority of the vote going to "I prefer one off purchases with paid expansions"

Couldn't agree more.

Inverno637d ago

I'll always think the concept is awesome. Back during the PS3 era I pictured a Spider-Man game that would be the traditional open world swinging playground that they typically are but every comic issue would be turned into dlc. It'd be the entirety of the Amazing line, 2 to 3 issues at a time, turnt to dlc until the entire Amazing line is told in form of a game. That concept eventually made it to the industry and they have consistently fk'd it up with every game that has been made as a "service".

jznrpg637d ago

There is nothing like sitting down , popping in a great single player game and blocking out the world.

OtterX637d ago

Sometimes I like to log into Fortnite and Call of Duty and just sit and listen to 12 years call me a n*****, f**, m***** f***** just so I can remember why I like to play single player games.
