Ups
  • Great story{Exhilirating{Great third person shooter action
Downs
  • Broken Stomp{No unlockable bonuses or collectables

So what if I'm late, no one bought the game anyway.

Deadspace, just like Mirrors Edge another under rated, under talked about game in 2008, I managed to platinum trophy it last weekend and judging from that, you guys can tell what kind of review I'm going to give it.
Reinventing the survival horror is how I shall put it. The game that was scarier than Resident Evil 5. Its good.

To start off with graphics, even now they still look pretty damn amazing, I was very impressed with the lighting, you have a torch on your weapons and when shined against something, there is an according shadow which I was impressed with. The game is really dark and moody but with its stellar presentation, it works, well. The biggest thing
I liked about the presentation was the no HUD, even your inventory was a hologram on your suit which you can be attacked and move around while browsing your inventory. The presentation and graphics are absolute top notch.

Now, where would a horror game be without sound? Fortunately Dead space has just that, great music, sound effects and voice overs. The music really, and I mean really sets the scene well, it makes it obvious when something is in the room with you and something isn't, a rather useful indicator. The sound effects are great, the guns, stomping and background sounds are top notch and even the voice acting is good. There are multiple audio and video logs picked up on the way as well only adding to the story.

Dead Space is a 3rd person survival horror with standard 3rd person shooter controls. There are a variety of different kinds of guns, some strange some you all know and love, I mean who doesn't love burning outer space zombie babies to a crisp? They are upgradable through nodes which can be purchased or found. The shooting is very solid, no big issues with controls and such, runs like a dream. One issue I did have was the stomp, the more powerful melee attack. It really doesn't work as well as it should, the enemy takes the damage but not the recoil which makes stomping very dangerous as when you shoot their legs off and they are on the ground, when stomping on them during mid attack, it does not interrupt their attack.
Apart from that the game brings new mechanics like kinesis, being able to move objects and shoot them as well, also stasis which allows you to slow down enemies or objects and last, zero gravity parts where you can jump from floor to roof. These all mix up the game making it enjoyable, there's also a rail shooter segment with canons and 2 mini games to enjoy.

Dead Space overall is a well made overall fun game, personally I did not find it as scary as some others said but its a hell of a lot scarier than any other game I've played recently. There are some fantastic bits that make you feel very uneasy and some bits that make you jump.
I also forgot to touch on a very important aspect, the story which luckily I though it certainly does not fall short. There are great twists and dialogue but one thing was lacking, Issac never talked giving distance from him and the player, otherwise it was very good. The replay value is relatively low,but this depends on the player, those trophy whores (like me) will get some decent time as it involves around 4 play throughs to get the platinum, otherwise the story is a good length having 12 chapters.
Overall I suggest those who like action, shooters, horrors to get this game and appreciate the unappreciated!

Score
9.2
Graphics
New game play segments to mix it up was great, shooting controls were very solid.
8.6
Sound
Pretty top notch even for our standard, I was very impressed having no HUD adding to the experience. Not much graphical hiccups.
9.1
Gameplay
What all horrors must excel in, solid voice acting and sound effects in conjunction with bone chilling music, the sound will not disappoint.
9.4
Fun Factor
Scary in some places and some scenes just make you go "Wow", there's a lot of fun to be had, whether you enjoy getting a scare of 'pwning aliens' Playing on Impossbile (hardest difficulty) only adds to the experience.
Overall
9.1

Agreed. Both DS and ME were great IMO. Dead Space sh!ts all over RE5, again, IMO. Nice review.

Digitaldude5999d ago

I agree, although I did enjoy RE5, but Dead space was a lot better.
Thanks :)

Blow Out Your Brains5999d ago

Dead Space was EPIC. Resident Evil 5 is just as awesome but is more action oriented.

Chocolate_Pain5999d ago

Yeah i would definitely agree this in my opinion was like RE5 since the actual RE5 was more like a gears of war or just action oriented but dont get me wrong RE5 co-op is fun as hell

Digitaldude5999d ago

Having Co-op took some survival horror aspect away from RE5 in my opinion. I mean in Deadspace, if your caught, there's no one to help you.

EA Cut Dead Space's Marketing Budget to Pour Into Mirror's Edge Due to Mock Review Scores

Former Visceral Games devs reveal Dead Space's marketing budget was cut in favor of Mirror's Edge because of mock review scores.

I wish EA would just release a DS2 remake. DS is my favorite horror game and DS2 is the best one in the franchise. But because DS1 failed to meet certain numbers EA scrapped the DS2 remake. SH2 remake was great rumors are Konami might be asking for another SH remake. The RE2 remake was great EA just needs to give it another try. But all they seem to do is shitty sports games that are no different from the year before. Change a few players, add different uniform colours, maybe change a team logo. Wash, rinse, repeat.

goken415d ago

Agreed. DS was great. But DS2 was even better. Would love to see a DS2 remake, though I would love to see a DS4 even more.
The problem with EA is they make easy $ from the slight changes to their sports titles like football FC games (whatever it’s called nowadays). People just lap that sh1t up.
Comparatively, games like DS which don’t sell 10s of millions, can’t sell them team player add ons and all the like, would seem a hassle to make and unappealing comparatively. Especially when you consider that most EA non sport titles haven’t actually performed well recently.

Dark Souls 2, Darksiders 2, Dead Space 2, Death Stranding 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

chicken_in_the_corn415d ago

The Dead space remake was so good. Better than the original. Shame they won't remake 2.

__y2jb415d ago

I loved the original dead space but the remake I just found boring. Game design has moved on and the game really showed its age, just small area encounters repeated again and again.

I bought Dead Space during launch window and I never bought a Mirror's Edge game .

Inverno414d ago

Then they went on to screw both games over.

UnbreakableAlex414d ago

I'd rather see a new and great Mirrors Edge than another boring Dead Space.

Why BioShock Deserves the Dead Space Remake Treatment

Dead Space recently received a popular remake that was faithful yet constructive, and the original BioShock is also deserving of this treatment.

No it doesn't need it. It was remastered in 60 fps last gen and still looks and plays great. Would be a waste of time, money and resources imo. It's games from 3 or 4 gens back that could use the remake treatment.

FallenAngel19841047d ago

There have already been 7th gen remakes of games already

Dead Space in particular already proves that just because a game looks good on original hardware doesn’t mean it cant look and play better

Jin_Sakai1047d ago

Agreed although I’m ready for some new groundbreaking IP this generation.

IamTylerDurden11047d ago (Edited 1047d ago )

Agreed. Remasters already happened and still look n play fantastic. DS was a different animal. It needed a remake, Bioshock doesn't NEED it. Infinite Remastered for example is extremely viable even today. What we do need is Bioshock 4. Rumors that equated to zip. Where is it? Ken really blew the pooch as well. Left to go do what? He was inspired by Tell Tale or something and went off to become irrelevant. Nice. And Bioshock Vita was scrapped. Fantastic.

toxic-inferno1046d ago

Bioshock 4 is definitely still in development. News trickles out about it every couple of months.

And Ken's next game (Judas) looks great from the teaser trailer.

IamTylerDurden11047d ago (Edited 1047d ago )

Yeah. Pretty much. I understand why they did it with TLOU to coincide with the show but certainly it didn't NEED a remake desperately. Obviously u are trolling and expect me defend anything Sony but idgaf about all that. I say what i feel is the truth.

Just like TLOU i wouldn't be upset if Bioshock received a remake but it doesn't desperately need it. I'd probably even play it bc like TLOU, i love Bioshock, but in these aren't identical scenarios either. Ppl kill ND for TLOU Remake yet it wasn't even their project originaly. It started as a potential Uncharted remake and passion project via Visual Arts and was passed to Bend i believe? ND took over bc the project obviously wasn't where it needed to be. And yet they still had Factions and possibly TLOU 3 in development as well. Bioshock has been dormant for a decade bar the remaster. Rumors of a sequel haven't materialised. A remake without a sequel would be disappointing. TLOU Remake is more tolerable knowing sequel/spinoffs are in development. Like i said, dif situation.

neutralgamer19921046d ago

It's not all about looks only

Tweaks to story
Tweaks to characters
Improvements to gameplay

Original bioshock have the worst puzzle solving system and can get frustrating quickly

WiiU-Dude1046d ago

The last part you said I agree COMPLETELY!!! Game companies need to mine games from the Sega Saturn, PS1 and N64 days and even the Dreamcast, GameCube, and PS2 days to give a full update to. I know those would require more work, but there are PLENTY of gems from those days that people would LOVE to play again or for the first time with a facelift!!! I know I would.

The games that need remaking are.

Resistance fall of man.
Motorstorm.

PS5 would produce something special.

There's been such an advancement in tech since the PS3 days. It would be awesome. DAY 1 BUY for me.

Storm231047d ago

I would kill for Resistance 1-3 Remake/Remaster. Same with MotorStorm series and Killzone series. Man, I loved my PS3. Can we also get the Metal Gear series and rescue MGS4 off the PS3? There is a rumor of MGS3 getting a remake. One of, if not my number 1, favorite game of all time.

On topic, I played Bioshock like 6 months after release after hearing from everyone and their mother how incredible it was. I know I will be in the minority on this, but I couldn't get into it. I think my expectations were too high. Totally my fault. Maybe I should give it another chance...

IamTylerDurden11047d ago (Edited 1047d ago )

Agreed, Killzone as well, but Sony has no interest in the future of those IP. It won't happen. If they cared about Motorstorm they wouldn't have axed Evolution. The last remaster from a dead studio "Wipeout" was exceptional yet nobody supported it. Even with a free VR inclusion. If ppl want these remasters...actually support the ones that release. Medievil same thing. Ppl cried for Demon's Souls Remake, The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3 and the sales didn't match the cries. None of these games sold as u would imagine given the internet pleas for these titles over a decade or more. DeS Remake did alright but given the circumstances it should've sold better. 92 Meta, PS5 launch exclusive, stunning visuals, and the first of the genre in an age where Eldin Ring will push 30 million units. Yes, DeS is only one platform but still.

Binarycode1045d ago

I do agree mostly with what you said.

I bought killzone,2,3. Did not like 4 other then it's graphics.

I bought infamous 1,2. Second son never did it for me apart from again the graphics, so parts were good. But world felt too empty. Probably needed a PS5 to do it justice.

Bought all the Resistance and Motorstorms, those games were awesome. They 100% need a remake.

PS3 was just an awesome machine, I know it was a pain to develop for, but it had some many titles that I loved.
I really enjoyed the Bioshock series, the first 2 were best. Very good games.

As for Demon souls.and the souls series in general. They never have had massive sales. I think because they are very hard games. we are talking a million or less. I think the remaster did 1.4million.

Motorstorm pacific rift did 1.4million PS3.I think.

Hopefully some of them will come back.

-Foxtrot1047d ago

I would love this

Expand on the lore

Incorporate Bioshock Infinite and Bioshock 2 plot lines

Add room rooms or maybe even an extra area

Maybe new plasmids

Give Jack a personality and add voice acting, it worked for Isaac. Jack did speak at the start of the game so adding onto that and giving him convos between Atlas or Ryan would be great

Aussiesummer1047d ago

Man could you imagine what bioshock would look like in ue5 with full raytracing, phwaaarrrhh.
