You can infect me with that virus anytime

Dark Sector was one of those games I wasn't sure about. It seemed like a cool idea and premise but more often than not I have seen games like this fall completely on their face. However my curiosity got the better of me so I decided to pick it up and give it a try.

Dark Sector follows some kind of special operative named Hayden. Hayden is dropped off at a Soviet military facility in order to assassinate a prisoner (or so it would seem). After completing his first objective, Hayden's superiors decide to send him after Dr. Mezner who is apparently running the facility. Upon finding Mezner Hayden is infected with a virus that slowly starts to mutate his body and from there he sets off to find Mezner and finish his mission. To be honest all you need to know about the story is that although it has an interesting premise, poor story telling and gaps in the narrative will make the story an after thought five minutes after you finish it. All the components are there but Digital Extremes failed to put it all together.

As an action game Dark Sector puts up a strong experience. I found myself pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it from beginning to end. The best part of Dark Sector is easily the glaive. The glaive is your most important weapon throughout the game and is definitely the most fun to use. The glaive is a disc like weapon that is attached to your hand. It can be thrown or used in hand to hand combat, but its appeal is in the variety of ways in which it can be thrown. You can do everything with the glaive from charging it for a power throw to entering a slow motion mode and actually guiding the glaive exactly where you want it to go. Easily my favorite glaive feature is the ability to combine it with different elements and watch your enemy’s burn to death or freeze and shatter as the glaive flies across the room. Dark Sector also implements some decent puzzles as well, which was nice to see in a game that is clearly so focused on the action elements. Now these puzzles are not on the level of a God of War or Resident Evil but they are woven into the game well enough to break up the action from time to time. These puzzles are also implemented in with each boss fight, ensuring that there is a little strategy.

Dark Sector; for all that it does right will frustrate you enough to diminish the experience. First off the hand to hand or melee combat is horrible. I don't know if it's because Hayden moves like he is wearing a full body cast, or if it's because the melee and finishing moves are border line broken or a combination of both; but the up close and personal combat of Dark Sector is pretty crappy. I was never sure whether Hayden was going to perform a finishing move or whether he was going to flail around until he accidentally beat his enemies to death. And I appreciate the developers attempting to add a little flare to the boss fights but you will end up either spending 30 minutes on a fight that should take 5 or dieing multiple times before you figure out exactly what you are supposed to do. Boss fights aren't so much a matter of strategy as they are a trial and error demonstration.

As a whole package, Dark Sector is a solid action game. Although you will question some of the developer’s decisions in respect to the story telling and gameplay, it will not stop most players from enjoying the game. Any fan of action games should definitely check out Dark Sector. I don't think it's worth $60 but it is definitely worth the $8 to rent it.

Score
8.3
Graphics
For the most part it's very solid. The AI responds very well and all the weapons have good hit detection. Dark Sector looses points for the frequently broken melee combat and Hayden's poor mobility.
9.0
Sound
Everything actually looks really good. Character models, environments and cut scenes all look good. The graphics also transition well to the multiplayer.
8.9
Gameplay
Voice overs are good but the sound effects can sound a little flat at times.
9.2
Fun Factor
The frustrations are usually minor and pass quickly. Overall a pretty fun game.
7.5
Online
It works well enough but it's just not very fun and there are currently only 2 game modes to play.
Overall
8.2

It is a pretty fun game but you are so right on the melee. The black market is fun too. I just wish it wasn't so dang expensive :(

BeaArthur6611d ago

I thought that black market was pretty cool, I wish they gave you more money throughout the game so you could try more weapons. But yeah the melee is basically broken.

PS360WII6611d ago

yeah melee kind of worked on the slimy guys but the actual people it was a joke. They just look at you and then kill you for the most part.

BeaArthur6611d ago

It didn't even work all that well on the slimy guys. I think part of the problem was that the camera angle doesn't really lend itself to melee combat, however it was definintely broken.

Jinxstar6610d ago

There wasn't rnough variety in kills too I felt. I wish they had done it god of war style with tons of variety in kills. the game was ok overall but gave me headaches if I played for too long for some reason...

I didn't think as highly of the game as you did, but it was a good read!

BeaArthur6610d ago

I always give bonus points for games that try to think outside the box.

paul_war6611d ago

The game was very good, but for the 1st next-gen game announced I expected more.

I disagree with the graphics score, at parts they are great, though the faces look ugly, there are to many repeated environments (mainly dark tunnels), and there was too much blurring for some reason it was used excessively.

The sounds were great, especially that of the Glaive. The only issue were the screams sounded like the same one over and over.

Limited replay value and poor multiplayer and the fact it was so easy means this is 7.9 at the most - I agree though, rent first.

Last Chance to Play: Dark Sector

"ZL: Before we knew of the Xbox 360, or anything concrete about the PlayStation 3, we had heard the name Dark Sector. This was a time when what would become the Wii was known only as the mysterious “Revolution.” The 7th Generation of video game consoles hadn’t even begun and we already received a taste of what was on the horizon with a video released by Digital Extremes."

That's interesting, They approached Sony with ideas several times, since they are independent, I wished Sony would have published one of their ideas as an exclusive! I loved Dark Sector, even the original concept of the game! Going to see about Warframe at launch.

I hope the PS4 has the ability to slow down time so I can play all these games

GribbleGrunger4710d ago

Or cut content so that we can finish them quicker!

Sony: Don't listen to this foolish Gribble

IcyEyes4710d ago

Warframe on PS4 looks great and with the new DS4 the game is pretty awesome !

mistertwoturbo4710d ago

Seriously, the only thing I'm limited by will be time. Even if I bought an Xbox OneEighty I wouldn't have the time to play those games either.

Definitely have no choice but to go with one console this time around for many reasons.

Foolsjoker4710d ago

I just plan on buying 2 of them so I can get through twice as many games.

Wedge194710d ago

These are the titles that will truly make the PS4 worth it. The big titles are going to be great, but the console will be made by the indies.

TrendyGamers4710d ago

It's so amazing to see so many MMO/F2P games coming to the PS4 this year.

WorldGamer4710d ago

Well, definitely no excuses anymore. Bring on the games.

zeddy4710d ago

hope to see more f2p games in the future, reason i'm getting a ps4 tbh.
