User Review : Damnation

Ups
  • Steampunk -- the designs of the ruined buildings, ships, bikes, and even weapon{Acrobatics - Takes a while to get used to but, once you get going it's all fun.{Voice acting - Surprisingly some of it was good, yet doesn't justify $60.00
Downs
  • Character models - the hair on some models was just bland.{Weapons - A few weapons just were not satisfying enough.{Sound FX - An explosion goes off and it seems like their was no sound sometimes.

Is Damnation Damned?

Throughout this week for those who have not been paying attention whether they are living under a rock or what not; a title that has hit the PS3, PC, and 360 called "Damnation" is not like an average third-person shooter. Acrobatic freedom fighters try to take on the likes of a soon to be tyrant in this seemingly action filled game.

I say seemingly as the action seems almost null in various places, this is not your typical shooter title where you will be facing waves of enemies at first; but rather enemies who have been spread out amongst the massive levels. Though of course this isn't a bad thing as many of these enemies are snipers with a few having shotguns and pistols just as your character does. The AI will move and navigate through the stage just as you will with your own character and their is no cover system so you are always on your toes whether playing through Hardcore or Insane difficulty.

Insofar as I've played through the first two levels (currently working on the second) I have found that their aren't to many glitches as I thought their might be at least from what I've heard from various other sites. The glitch that most people may find to be the best or so I have found out is that by playing on a difficulty a step higher than casual and beating the first level; I was able to option both the trophy for hardcore and casual for completing the first level (which is a silver and a bronze trophy for those who don't know).

Another pretty big aspect to the game is the inclusion of an online as well as offline (split screen) multiplayer. Many may not care, but for those trophy grabbers this is one where you must complete the game with another; and if that glitch for trophies still holds down the lane then simply have a friend take you through Insane difficult and by the time you beat the game you will have gained a few Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies.

The inclusion of a multiplayer mode is pretty nice touch, but certainly could have done without and perhaps added a bit more to the main storyline, inclusion of more weapons or even just more stages; yet I am not going to complain to much as it is a pretty fun way to challenge other people who have bought the game (luckily there were others out there!)

Aside from the trophies I've found the game to be pretty satisfying for killing time, I would not recommend running out and buying it as it just hit the shelves today; but rather go to your local blockbuster, FamilyVideo or even Hollywood video and try to find the game for rent; perhaps later on down the line when the game becomes 29.99 or even 39.99 then perhaps the price can be justified. For those who love steampunk and third person shooters please just hold off on this title for a little while or resort to renting.

Score
7.8
Graphics
Hard at first, but once you get the hang of the game it really becomes a fun and somewhat fast paced game.
7.8
Sound
Well it may be lacking in a few spots such as on a few character models when they do a close up, this game certainly makes up for it with steampunk designs.
6.6
Gameplay
Some of the explosives (especially in the cutscenes) do not justify the 60.00 price tag; yet some of the weapons (Sniper rifle and turrents) certainly sound like they could bring down a tank.
7.7
Fun Factor
Definitely fun and would say it would make a great rental on those Friday or Saturday nights. Be sure to try the co-op!
7.8
Online
Well I was only able to try multiplayer with two other people and the game never got up to the maximum of eight. All I can say is, you could waste an hour in this mode and not know it (being that the controls are easy for you).
Overall
7.5

About the game please feel free to leave a comment or send me a private message I'll be happy to answer what I can. Though I did find the 1500 character limit a bit of a restraint and I will more than likely be blogging the rest of my experience later on this week and submitting that for approval. Check back later tomorrow for my review of Cross-Edge

I was hoping this was going to be good. The previews of the multiplayer seemed like they could have been fun.
It hasn't got very good reviews yet, but I think I'll still pick it up when price goes down as I do like these kind of games.
Thanks for your review.

The only downside I can say is it feels like Resident Evil 5 (not graphic wise) but in the department of being short yet seeming long because of things you can do, at least if you include multiplayer. That is what I found to be the most fun aspect of the whole game. Even though I never got a chance for 4v4 TDM or eight Deathmatch, it was still fun because I could always find out where people were trying to camp; which is helpful especially if they found a sniper rifle.

Though yeah, I'd wait until it drops it price at least until it's $30.00 or so. Average game pretty much and one of those summer titles that isn't really needed right away, but can be held off till later.

probably wait based on your review...everyone else says dont buy but it does look like a cool setting to me...

Myst6196d ago

Yeah it's a nice setting and I outlined more in another review (my first one sucked since it was my first I didn't know how to write it really, but the blog posting one is better)

Then I wrote what Damnation should have been and it would have been better if it were just a multiplayer game instead of one with a campaign tacked on.

good review, sounds like it will make an awesome rental, next time I need an FPS fix.

Myst6196d ago

Yeah it isn't to horribly bad, only thing is their is no health or stamina bar as you would usually see on the screen (at least I may have missed it). Yet as you get closer to dying the screen begins to fade into grey and stamina it's all about just knowing I suppose. Other than that I'd say give the multiplayer a try - probably the best thing out of the whole game, if you can find a game sadly.
